PRINCIPAL PURPOSE OF JOB: Under the supervision of the Faculty/Principal Investigator (PI), the Research Associate – Floating Raceway position, will perform research and Extension activities within the College of Agriculture, Communities, and the Sciences (CACS) Aquaculture Program at Kentucky State University. This position will also serve as a support for the ACE. This is a split appointment with a 75% research and 25% extension delegation of time and effort.
The successful candidate will conduct research and Extension activities in Floating Raceways within the College of Agriculture, Communities, and the Sciences (CACS) Aquaculture Program at Kentucky State University.
SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY: The Research Associate – Floating Raceways Production will perform research and Extension activities within the College of Agriculture, Communities, and the Sciences (CACS) Aquaculture Program at Kentucky State University. Research and Extension duties include assisting in the planning, designing, and implementation of Floating Raceway, maintenance of Floating Raceway systems, overseeing the operation of the Floating Raceway Research and Demonstration facility, providing facility tours, assisting stakeholders with questions related to aquaculture and Floating Raceways, and other duties as required. This position will also serve as a support for ACE. This is a split appointment with a 75% research and 25% extension delegation of time and effort. Some travel related to the above responsibilities, approximately 10%, is required.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
1. Assist in the designing and implementation of Floating Raceway research.
2. Perform fish husbandry activities, sampling, and data collection.
3. Assist with construction and launching raceways.
4. Maintain aquatic animal health.
5. Maintain detailed data in proper spreadsheet layout.
6. Publish research in peer-reviewed journals.
7. Supervise undergraduate/graduate students and technicians.
8. Oversee operation and maintenance of the Floating Raceway Research and Demonstration facility.
9. Support and participate in extension/outreach activities related to Floating Raceways.
OTHER DUTIES: This position will conduct other duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS: M.S. in Aquaculture, Agriculture, Biology, Biotechnology, or related field.
Licensing and Certifications: NA
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:
• Knowledge of aquaculture, fish production, Floating Raceway design, construction and management.
• Some experience with recirculating aquaculture systems.
• Effective oral and writing skills.
• Computer literacy.
• Ability to work with minimum supervision, but cooperatively work with others.
• Initiative, resourcefulness, punctuality, and ability to work independently are essential.
• Ability to organize a diverse workload.
• Exhibit professional and personable demeanor.
• Ability to work with groups from K-12 to senior citizens.
• Must possess a valid driver’s license.
• Travel and overnight stays may be necessary (approximately 10% of total work).
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:
This position will be responsible for supervising high school and undergraduate students.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
• May work outside in adverse weather conditions.
• Work involves considerable exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures and humidity.
• Extensive physical activity. Requires strenuous physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required of objects over 50 pounds.
• Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.
• This job involves travel. The position will have statewide responsibilities. Out of state travel may be necessary to attend conferences or other events.
