Clemson University's Clemson Composites Center is looking for a Research Associate to fulfill the following duties:
- Works with other staff at CCC and be supervised by the Director of the Center.
- Resolves routine issues without supervisory guidance/approval and use the available learning materials to expand expertise within the equipment and processes involved at CCC.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
30% - Essential - Production Duties:
Learns and be familiar with operation procedures for existing and new manufacturing equipment (initial training and job-shadowing will be provided). Produce parts, components and final assemblies using CCC manufacturing equipment (e.g. high-pressure resin transfer molding, thermoforming, injection molding, wet compression molding, metal and composites stamping, additive manufacturing for metals, plastics, and composites, and manual fabrication tools). Troubleshoots processes and resolve potential issues.
20% - Essential - Testing & Reporting Duties
Learns and be familiar with operation procedures for existing and new testing equipment (initial training and job-shadowing will be provided). Test parts, components, and final assemblies as per test standards (e.g. ASTM, SAE, ISO, OEM-specific) using CCC testing equipment (e.g. Instron or other universal mechanical testing machines, DCS, rheometer, etc). Creates reports for manufacturing and testing projects using the data acquired through manufacturing trials and test results. Collaborates with CCC Program Coordinator and center/project leaders and personnel as required to develop these reports.
20% - Essential - Inventory & Maintenance Management:
Creates and maintains equipment inventory, and operation and maintenance manuals. Schedules and facilitates preventative maintenance activities including calibration, diagnostics and design input to enhance function- and service ability of CCC equipment/apparatus. Manages inventory of lab consumables; coordinates with appropriate personnel on procurement of supplies.
20% - Essential - General Support:
Mentors, assists, and supervises students and scholars involved at CCC. Assists in center tours to both internal and external stakeholders. Cleans machines, equipment, and work area according to Standard Operating Procedures. Supports Environmental Safety & Health (ES&H) and Quality System policies to provide a safe workplace and eliminate conditions and behaviors which may cause work related illnesses and/or injuries while delivering quality product and services on time. Works with necessary CU departments (Research Safety, Procurement, etc.) to deliver necessary information, reports and data (if any).
10% - Essential - New Equipment/Instrument:
Oversees assembly and/or installation of new equipment and instrumentation at CCC.
Education - Associate's Degree and related composites or plastics manufacturing technician or other manufacturing equipment operations.
Work Experience - 3+ years
PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:Education - Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology.
Work Experience - Previous experience working in composites or plastics manufacturing companies, especially the experience of operating equipment such as injection molding machines, compression or stamping press, thermoforming units, or any other related manufacturing equipment
