Research Assistant III - Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute

The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing military medicine. This position will be in support of Dr. R. Joel Lowy in the Scientific Research Department (SRD) within the Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute (AFRRI) in Bethesda, MD. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to AFRRI. The focus of the laboratory is the impact of ionizing radiation and microbial pathogens on the innate immune system singly and in combination in controlling the production of host defense molecules. Current research is to understand the effects of radiation and viruses on cell signaling pathways, including feedback controls, resulting in macrophage inflammatory cytokine and interferon production. 
 
We are looking for a researcher who is independently motivated and able to provide contributions and creativity in their support of the PI and project goals while working with other laboratory and institute personnel. The incumbent will and have responsibilities planning and conducting experimentation, data analysis, providing input for experimental designs and communication results. Experiments include the use of ionizing radiation and work with a variety of microorganisms and their biochemical simulants using methods in virology assays, cell and molecular biology, and immunology. Tissue culture, viral titer assays, Western blotting, multiplex “Luminex”cytokine/chemokine and interferon ELISA assays are used extensively. Applicants are expected have the desire to learn or aid in development of new approaches as needed.

AFRRI is a research institute within the Uniform Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS), US Department of Defense, located in the Maryland suburbs of Washington, D.C. Responsibilities:
HJF is seeking a Research Assistant III to perform research and/or development in collaboration with others for projects. Provides laboratory and technical support to senior technical and professional staff. Solves problems of moderate complexity in carrying out research projects in a clinical or laboratory environment.
 
Responsibilities:
  • Performs laboratory research projects including collection and organization of data. Maintains compliance with established laboratory safety and other procedures. Oversees and ensures the proper disposal of infectious and hazardous materials.
  • Makes detailed observations about experiment. Provides quality control, trouble shooting, and the maintenance of specialized reagents and equipment.
  • Conducts critical review of procedures, determining where issues occurred and formulating plans to correct problems as they arise.
  • Prepares technical reports, summaries, and protocols. Provides basic data analysis and interpretation. Assists in the preparation of manuscripts and data for presentations at scientific meetings and publication in journals.
  • Maintains clear and accurate laboratory records, inventories, and logbooks. Performs data entry for research projects and may maintain data and database(s).
  • Follows instructions and standard operating procedures to perform expected tasks. Trains and assists lower-level laboratory staff.
  • May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.
 
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of complex laboratory techniques.
  • Ability to follow basic instructions.
  • Good communication and analytical skills.
  • Experience using techniques for cell culture, cell biology and molecular assays, Western blotting and virology methods.
  • Background in Molecular and/or Cell Biology, Virology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Biophysics, or closely related field. Candidates with a M.S. with these areas of experience are also of interest. 
 
Physical Capabilities:
  • Lifting: Requires lifting materials up to 25 lbs.
  • Ability to stand or sit at a computer for prolonged periods.
  • Ability to climb, pull, and lift heavy objects.

Qualifications:
Work Environment
  • This position will take place primarily in a clinical or laboratory setting. 
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree required. 
  • Minimum of 6-8 years’ experience required.
