Job description

The Industrial Relations Section (IRS) at Princeton University is seeking a Research and Data Manager to coordinate the IRS's research activities.  The IRS, established in 1922, is a Research and instructional center within the Princeton Economics Department that houses approximately 40 faculty, graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, and visiting researchers who are carrying out research in labor economics, public policy, and related areas.

 

The Research and Data Manager provides both Research and Data systems coordination for IRS research activities involving faculty, graduate students, and research assistants. The Research and Data Manager possesses both advanced analytical research experience as well as the technical skills needed to work effectively with Linux and Windows systems administrators in IT and Research Computing. Reporting to the IRS Director with dotted line reporting to the Associate Director, this position demonstrates expertise in the design and management of research studies in economics and social sciences as well as familiarity with data acquisition, management, and storage systems. The Research and Data Manager supervises eight or more full-time predoctoral research assistants, collaborating with Economics and School for Public and International Affairs colleagues to organize professional development and enrichment activities as part of Princeton's Economics predoctoral program. This key research position serves as liaison to campus partners, such as Research Computing, Office of Research Project Administration, and the Data-Driven Social Science Initiative. In addition to supporting the research of IRS members, this position may also engage in individual research.

 

This is a three-year term position with the possibility of renewal.

Research Staff Management (30%)

 

  • Oversee recruitment, hiring, and onboarding of eight or more predoctoral research assistants in partnership with faculty supervisors, manage the assignment of work to research assistants and approval of time off
  • Manage performance by meeting regularly with research staff, setting expectations, developing performance and professional development goals, and tracking progress towards those goals
  • Obtain regular feedback from faculty supervisors about research staff performance
  • Participate in planning professional development, enrichment, and social activities for research staff
  • As needed, recruit and hire temporary research staff (students, casual hourly workers, staff hired through agencies) and approve hours worked

 

Data and Systems Management (30%)

 

  • Coordinate data acquisitions from various public and private organizations
  • Manage workflows for purchasing and Data use agreement review and approval, partnering with colleagues in the Office of Research Project Administration (ORPA) and Finance (Purchasing)
  • Manage access to three or more secure data rooms in coordination with IRS IT technical support specialist
  • Collaborate with Research Computing to manage access to IRS physical data servers, Citadel, and other data storage locations, including TigerData
  • Collaborate with labor economics librarian and assistant to manage database of IRS data use agreements and applications 

 

Research Design and Implementation (25%)

 

  • Manage research studies including subject interaction, implementation of study design and controls, and on-and-off-site trouble shooting.
  • Work with the faculty, researchers, postdocs, and graduate students to ensure data protocols, human research subject regulations and all relevant University policies are followed.
  • Serve as additional staff on IRB protocols to collaborate with research staff in preparing submissions
  • Provide guidance and feedback on research proposals and Data applications
  • Connect IRS members to other campus partners for resources and expertise supporting research

 

Other Research-Related Activities (15%)

 

  • Develop in-depth knowledge of faculty and graduate student research agendas and projects
  • With the associate director, document procedures and policies related to data and funding requests
  • Gather benchmarking information about peer labor economics centers and departments and evaluate potential developments in IRS research operations
  • Conduct own research projects

 


  • Masters degree in economics or public policy and relevant work experience
  • Strong analytical, management, leadership, communications, writing, and presentation skills.
  • Proficiency in working with statistical programs such as STATA and R.
  • Basic understanding of Linux OS security and administration related topics such as user/group management, working on the command line, and permissions
  • Supervisory and/or teaching and advising experience
  • Research data management experience
