Job description

The Medical Coding Auditor is responsible for performing internal QA audits on coding staff and supporting the quality of coding provided by coders.

  • Minimum of three (3) years of inpatient hospital auditing experience required
  • Must hold at least one of the following certifications: RHIA, RHIT, CCS


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Monitors coding quality with regards to accuracy and correct coding of hospital services, including ICD-9-CM, present on admission (POA), discharge disposition, and MS-DRG assignment
  • Reviews charts for accurate and timely coding that is supported by medical record documentation and is in accordance with facility and Official Coding Guidelines
  • Responds to questions from assigned both Maxim and Client’s coding staff
  • Orients new Maxim and Client’s staff
  • Communicates effectively and timely with Client contracts
  • Communicates any and all concerns regarding client and/or staff to Remote Operations Manager or Director of HIM Services
  • Maintains and adheres to HIPAA privacy and security standards
  • Identifies coding risks/problems proactively and make appropriate recommendations
  • Communicates with Client’s Compliance department to decide on necessary Q&A projects
  • Provides constructive feedback to Client staff and Maxim staff on all audit findings
  • Manages each Client Site assigned, including communicating and resolving issues identified by the Client, VA Operations Manager, and/or VA Director of HIM. All client-identified issues will be addressed and/or resolved in a timely manner
  • Addresses any coding discrepancies based on review process
  • Performs preliminary and routine audits on coding staff
  • Reviews charts for accurate and timely coding that is supported by medical record documentation and is in accordance with facility and Official Coding Guidelines
  • Completes work assignments independently
  • Keeps current with new laws, regulations, and guidelines related to coding
  • Seeks guidance to complete any assigned task requiring further clarification
  • Engages in professional development activities to maintain professional certification(s)
  • Performs other duties as assigned/necessary

Minimum Requirements:
  • Minimum of three (3) years of inpatient hospital coding/auditing experience required
  • Must hold at least one of the following certifications: RHIA, RHIT, CCS
  • Ability to effectively elicit/provide information to and from appropriate individuals (including, but not limited to, supervisors, co-workers, clients) via strong communication skills; proficiency in the English language may be required
  • Computer proficiency required
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
