General Summary
Works under the direct supervision of a physical or occupational therapist. Transfers patients from bed to wheelchair or cart using learned techniques for handling persons with disabilities. Prepares patient for treatment by the Physical or Occupational Therapist, assists therapist with patient care and activities. Completes daily patient schedule independently and documents treatment as requested by the supervising therapist. Performs all hydrotherapy duties. Assists secretary with billing and assumes responsibility in his/her absence. Keeps department well stocked. Knowledgeable in sterile techniques and first aide. May conduct MS class and other fitness group activities weekly.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Ability to read, write, and perform mathematical calculations at a level normally acquired through completion of a high school education or equivalent. Ability to read and comprehend basic medical terminology in order to apply correct transfer techniques. Ability to operate simple measuring devices and equipment. Ability to interpret and follow verbal and written directions accurately.
- Basic problem solving skills necessary in order to recognize signs of patient distress and potentially dangerous circumstances.
- Six to twelve months experience in health care setting preferred.
- Communication skills necessary to effectively communicate with patients, families, nursing and therapy staff members.
- CPR required or obtained within 1 month of hire.
Working Conditions
- Substantial levels (20-50% of time) of physical exertion required, including lifting, treatment and transfer patients.
- Occasional exposure (6-20% of time) to adverse conditions.
