Job Description

General Summary

This role is reserved for the New Graduate or nurse with less than 12 months experience. The nurse will utilize this time to learn the institution and nursing practice. It is expected that a nurse in this role successfully all requirements of the Nurse Residency Program and Departmental Orientation. Utilizes Relationship Based Care and the Nursing Process as the frame of reference for practice as a professional nurse. Participates in activities to develop own practice, and to support professional practice goals at the unit level. Functions effectively as a member of a multidisciplinary health care team. Strives to provide an environment where patients, families, and colleagues collaborate in the delivery of care. Is accountable to patient, family and team members for care provided and to the nurse manager for totality of work performance. Is accountable to hold to the Service Standards and to the Nursing Mission, Vision and Values.

Reporting Relationships

Reports to Nurse Manager/Charge Nurse of unit to which assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Education Requirements

  1. An Associate Degree in Nursing is required; Bachelor of Science from a College of Nursing is preferred.
  2. Current Maryland RN licensure is required prior to beginning orientation.
  3. Employees hired on or after July 1, 2018 will be required to complete a Bachelor of Science from a College of Nursing within 5 years from the date of hire or transfer into Clinical Nurse I position.

Qualifications

  1. American Heart Association (AHA) BLS required upon hire
  2. Must meet all unit specific certification requirements: (PALS, ACLS, NRP)
  3. Must complete all of the Nurse Residency Program Requirements
  4. Ability to learn and use computer systems in order to manage patient information
  5. Demonstrated effective interpersonal, verbal and written communications skills

Working Conditions

Works inside a clean, well-lighted environment. . May be exposed to frequent interruptions and multiple crisis situations. May be physically or verbally abused by patients. Expected to work on rotating shifts including weekends and holidays as necessary. May be expected to work on other than regular unit to provide adequate staffing, if the need arises. Participates in temporary assignment measures of department of Nursing. Potential for regular exposure to communicable diseases and hazardous materials, requiring the observance of Standard (Universal) Precautions and safe handling practices. This position has been classified as medium exposure risk and requires the completion of an annual respirator mask fitting.

Physical Requirements

Standing, sitting, bending and walking is required 0-5 hours/shift. Involves heavy lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling (up to and in excess of 100 lbs.) 0-3 hours/shift, in accordance with Safe Patient Lifting policy. Includes reaching for, fingering, grasping and handling equipment/supplies 0-3 hours/shift. Requires hearing/listening to differentiate sounds 0-3 hours/shift. Visual acuity is necessary to read labels, charts, documents and use various instruments 0-3 hours/shift.


Additional Information

4South is a 24-bed acute Medical/Surgical/Telemetry Kaiser Permanente unit with remote telemetry capabilities. The unit provides 24-hour compassionate nursing care to a diverse patient population. We accept patients admitted with diagnoses such as, but not limited to Stroke, Pneumonia, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), Cellulitis, Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT), Sepsis, Infectious Diseases, Various Gastrointestinal Disorders, Renal Failure and General Surgical Needs. Nursing care follows the Relationship Based Care Model. This model emphasizes the importance of the relationships between the nurses, patients, and families. Whenever possible, the patient and family are included in the plan of care, treatment and setting of goals during their hospitalization. We have a very active Unit Practice Council. We also promote and encourage our team members to apply for advancement on our Professional Advancement Model.
