Inland Valley Hospital
This campus of Southwest Healthcare System, a 122-bed acute care hospital, was recently awarded in the Fall of 2018 with an "A" Grade from the Leapfrog Group as having the highest level of patient safety as well as the Top General Hospital Award from Leapfrog (one of only 35 hospitals to earn this distinction nationwide). Inland Valley is the only hospital in the region to offer Level II Trauma Services, an Advanced Certified Primary Stroke Center, the region's only Total Joint Center now with advanced certification from the Joint Commission for hip and knee surgery as well core certification for shoulder surgery and is a nationally recognized center for weight-loss surgery by the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (Also awarded the Blue Distinction for outstanding bariatric surgical services).

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES
Serves as a Specialized Registered Nurse who provides the surgical team with assistance within the Operating Room and other similar settings. Assists the surgeon with specific intraoperative procedures that are beyond the scope of practice for Registered Nurses without RNFA education and training. Functions interdependently with the surgeon and applies knowledge, skill, and judgment necessary to assist the surgeon in performing a safe operation that yields optimal results for the patient. Functions within the state laws regarding surgical assisting and state nursing practice act. The Certified RNFA does not concurrently function as the Scrub Nurse.
The RNFA may assist the surgeon by performing technical functions during surgery, including intra-operative retraction, homeostasis, tissue manipulation, and wound closure
The function of the Registered Nurse (RNFA) is to provide direct patient care as part of the perioperative role, by acting as FIRST ASSISTant to the surgeon during operative procedures
The RNFA will be recorded under "Assistant" on the operative record and should be dictated by the primary surgeon on the operative report.
The RNFA will perform FIRST ASSISTing under the direct supervision of the primary surgeon.
The RNFA will immediately communicate any patient care issues verbally to the surgeon.
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, area (BSP), circumference and volume.
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
Effective written and verbal communication skills in the English language
Qualifications
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Minimum two years' experience as a circulating nurse and scrub experience required
MINIMUM ESSENTIAL EDUCATION
Bachelors degree in nursing from an accredited School of Nursing.
Completion of an accredited RN First Assistant program that includes didactic and supervised clinical practice, as based on AORN's approved list of educational programs for the CRNFA. Completion of didactic portion must occur within six months of hire.
Registered Nurse Interns must obtain their required RNFA program hours within 3 months of hire
At the end of two years in the RNFA Intern development role, it is expected the employee will move to the CRNFA job description, or cease employment in this position.
REQUIRED LICENSURE / CERTIFICATIONS
Registered Nurse with current California RN license.
Current BLS certification.
Current ACLS certification
Current PALS certification
CNOR must be obtained within 1 year of hire.
Certified Nurse First Assist (CRNFA) by the Competency and Credentialing Institute preferred
