Job Description
Provide direct nursing care for students with disabilities and staff as needed. The students we serve have a variety of medical needs that require the support of a compassionate nurse. In this role you will be part of a small team of nurses, therapists and teachers that ensure our students the best medical attention and educational services.
REPORTS TO:
Principal/ School Nurse
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provides nursing care to students and staff in accordance with New Jersey statutes, regulations and Department of Education (DOE) guidelines, and PILLAR CARE CONTINUUM policies and procedures
- Administers medication to students according to prescription and performs related administrative responsibilities
- Determines need to refer students home because of illness or to hospitals, clinics, or physicians
- Obtains required health information for each student (physicals, height and weight) annually and ensures that all student immunizations are up to date
- May participate in intake screening of students to assist in determination school's ability to meet student's medical needs
- May participate in IEP meeting to discuss health care planning needs
- Assists in organizing medical clinics and various screening activities; participates in clinics as required
- May serve as interface between school and medical professionals
- May conducts and participate in in-service staff training on health related issues
- Administration of tube feedings and care of G-Tube site
- Performs other functions as directed by supervisor
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
- Knowledge and demonstrated competence in the practice and principles of nursing
- Understanding of statutes, rules and regulations governing the practice of nursing in a school setting
- Understanding of child development and developmental disabilities
- The ability to exercise good judgement and convey health information to others in a clear, concise and logically
- Maintains respect and confidentiality
- Communicate effectively verbally and in writing
- Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain proper working relationships with students, parents, co-workers and staff
- Ability to perform physical activities such as lifting, carrying and moving children with disabilities while maintaining a safe environment;
- Professional demeanor and adherence to ethical standards, personnel policies, procedures and universal health precautions
- The ability to display flexibility in work assignments and overall professionalism
QUALIFICATIONS:
- RN License required; graduate of an accredited nursing program licensed in the State of New Jersey
- Minimum of 1 years' experience in a school, pediatric or group home setting
