JOB DESCRIPTION
The Operating Room Nurse is responsible for keeping patients safe during surgery by providing care before, during, or after surgeries. They are tasked with ensuring Operating Rooms are clean and sterile while preparing for and following procedures.
Per diem shifts available up to 40 hours a week scheduled
DUTIES
- Consults and coordinates with healthcare team members to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care plans.
- Conducts pre- and post-operative education.
- Serves as the communication liaison to family and members of the operating team.
- Takes and monitors patients’ vital signs.
- Provides basic, bedside care.
- Prepares and administers (orally, subcutaneously, through an IV) and records prescribed medications.
- Communicates relevant information to a physician, facility manager, and appropriate staff.
- Reports adverse reactions to medications or treatments in accordance with the policy regarding the administration of medications by a licensed Registered Nurse.
- Responds to life-saving situations based on nursing standards and protocol.
- Records all care information concisely, accurately, and completely, in a timely manner, in the appropriate format, and on the appropriate forms.
- Preps Operating Room for patient/procedure.
- Initiates corrective action whenever information from monitoring equipment shows adverse symptomatology.
- Monitors patients’ physical and emotional well-being throughout the continuum of patient care.
- Initiates patient education plan, as prescribed by a physician.
- Teaches patients and significant others how to manage their post-treatment home care needs, self-administration of medication, and rehabilitation.
- Assists in positioning and responding to the comfort/safety of the patient.
- Observes and enforces strict standards of asepsis.
- Assess patients prior to surgery (e.g., NPO status) and alleviate their concerns.
- Gather all supplies needed for the operation.
- Assume responsibility for keeping the Operating Room sterilized.
- Position and prepare the patient on the operating table.
- Pass medical instruments or other objects to the surgeon during the operation.
- Monitor the patient’s vital signs to detect anomalies.
- Evaluate patients in postoperative phases.
- Adhere to safety standards and precautions.
- Assume duties within or out of the sterile field as assigned.
- And other duties as required.
EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
- National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN) certification
- A valid nursing certificate, BSN, or MSN degree from an accredited college or university.
- A valid unencumbered RN license for the State
- Current vaccinations and health clearance certification.
- Excellent knowledge of aseptic and sterile techniques.
- ACLS certification.
- Must have previous experience with starting IVs.
- Must have at least 12 months of relevant consecutive acute care experience in this specialty.
- High-level interpersonal skills and the ability to connect with patients during stressful experiences.
- Strong organizational abilities and good communication skills
- The appropriate license to work in their state/county.
- Fluent in English.
