Job Summary:
The Registered Nurse in Neuro Interventional Radiology (Neuro IR) is responsible for providing specialized nursing care to patients undergoing diagnostic and therapeutic neurointerventional procedures. The Neuro IR RN plays a crucial role in assisting the interventional radiologist and ensuring the safety and well-being of patients throughout the entire process.
Responsibilities:
Patient Assessment and Pre-procedure Preparation:
- Conduct comprehensive assessments of patients scheduled for neurointerventional procedures.
- Review patient medical histories and ensure all necessary pre-procedure evaluations are completed.
- Explain procedures, risks, and benefits to patients and obtain informed consent.
Procedural Assistance:
- Assist the interventional radiologist during neurointerventional procedures, including angiography, embolization, and thrombectomy.
- Monitor patients' vital signs and neurological status during procedures.
- Administer medications and contrast agents as prescribed.
Post-procedure Care:
- Monitor patients closely during the immediate post-procedure period.
- Assess and manage potential complications, such as bleeding or allergic reactions.
- Provide post-procedure instructions and education to patients and their families.
Collaboration and Communication:
- Collaborate with the interventional radiology team, including radiologists, technologists, and other healthcare professionals.
- Communicate effectively with patients and their families, addressing concerns and providing updates on the procedure.
Emergency Response:
- Respond to medical emergencies and implement appropriate interventions.
- Maintain readiness for urgent situations, such as vessel perforation or contrast reactions.
Documentation:
- Maintain accurate and thorough documentation of pre-procedure assessments, procedural details, and post-procedure care.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory and institutional documentation standards.
Patient and Family Education:
- Educate patients and their families about the neurointerventional procedure, potential risks, and post-procedure care.
- Provide information on recovery expectations and follow-up appointments.
Education:
- Graduation from an accredited nursing program.
- Current RN license in the state of practice.
Experience: Prior experience in interventional radiology, neurology, or critical care nursing is often preferred.
Skills:
- Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work in a high-stress and dynamic procedural environment.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Certifications:
- Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certifications are typically required.
- Additional certifications such as Certified Radiology Nurse (CRN) may be preferred.
