General Description

Under the guidance of the staff physician and assigned Nurse Practitioner, the Registered Nurse will provide resident nursing support for occupational and preventative medicine services for the NASA supported population at Goddard Space Flight Center (Greenbelt, MD Health Unit) through the operations and management of the on-site clinic and wellness campaigns. This position is responsible for collaborating with the staff physician on a variety of services including emergency first aid, wellness promotion, health screenings and assessments and implanting measures to protect employees from exposure to work related environmental hazards.

How You Will Fulfill Your Mission

  • Supports health maintenance and occupational related examinations including pre-placement, surveillance, job certification, special purpose, and other examinations as medically necessary for civil service employees, that meet the requirements of NPR 1800.1, NASA Occupational Health Program Procedures; OSHA; Department of Transportation (DOT); Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC); and other regulatory agencies.
  • Obtains vital signs, performs clinical tests, and assists with physician examinations as needed.
  • Identify emergencies, summons appropriate assistance, and provides care within their legal scope of practice.
  • Administer medications and treatments and observe for and reports adverse reactions.
  • Sets priorities based on clinical concerns and help maintain patient flow in the clinic.
  • Provides instruction to patients on health-related issues and help maintain patient education materials.
  • Serves as a patient advocate by providing privacy and by providing consultative support.
  • Maintains, calibrate, and check medical equipment and supplies. Identify equipment that needs to be serviced, calibrated, or replaced if not functioning or is expired.
  • Monitor and maintain an adequate stock of supplies and medications.
  • Functions as a member of the health care team. Shares ideas with others and supports the overall mission of the clinic.
  • Participates in peer review and quality improvement activities.
  • Proficiently performs necessary testing for surveillance medical monitoring, e.g. audiometry and spirometry.

Specific Knowledge/Certifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Licensed in the State of Virginia as a Registered Nurse
  • Graduate of a U.S. accredited nursing school.
  • At least three years of professional nursing experience
  • Demonstrated proficiency in physical exams, obtaining blood pressure, electrocardiograms, completing vision, hearing, and spirometry exams.
  • Previous experience planning and implementing Education and Wellness Programs and outreach.
  • Certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support.
  • Obtain Bloodborne Pathogen training within 30 days of employment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience supporting federal workforce.
  • Familiar and experience with NASA occupational health and safety policies.
  • Certification and/or experience in Emergency or Critical Care Nursing
  • Previous experience working in an occupational health setting.
  • Up-to-date completion of a NIOSH Spirometry Course and designation as an Occupational Hearing Conservationist through CAOHC.

Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distant vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust and focus.
  • Work Environment: Work will be performed in a hybrid environment and occasionally with irregular hours.
  • Travel: A low amount of travel away from the office may be required
