(Job #536061)Registered Nurse II (10/12), Salary Range: $3,641.00 - 7,024.00monthly. Anticipated Hiring Range: $3,641.00 - $4,900.00monthly. Appointments are typically made at the beginning of the salary range. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. This is a full-time, benefited, exempt, 10/12 pay plan (work 10 months of the year with pay and benefits over 12 months) permanent position with a one-year probationary period in Student Health & Wellbeing Services. Position Summary: Under regular supervision, the RN II is responsible for providing high quality medical triage and assessment, reassessment, and follow up of patients, managing patient flow, and for performing a variety of nursing care and administrative duties in the acute care clinic of the Student Health Center.

 

Key Responsibilities:

40% - Intake and Management of Patient Flow:

  • Identify, assess, and analyze problems in the clinic with team members to identify staffing needs in order to direct patient flow efficiently. This includes communication with supervisor and others regarding daily support services, need for assistance, and change of assignments in the case of unplanned absences.
  • Determine appropriate patient centered care including assessment, triage, and monitoring while working within standard policies, procedures and protocols.
  • Provide clinicians with written documentation inclusive of chief complaint and nursing observations / diagnosis based on patient's physical condition, vital signs, and interpretation of information obtained during patient intake; as well as patient acuity (level of clinical urgency).
  • Focus on patient education, self-care and preventive health care measures within acute care and mental health treatment settings.
  • Daily problem solving to address individual patient condition (medical, psychological, and financial situation) within scope of RN practice.
  • Maintain working knowledge of patient resources and availability of programs.
  • Initiate review of daily clinic flow (reviews charts day prior) and follows up on complicated patient situations (physical and mental health) among RN staff and clinical team as appropriate.
  • In concert with medical providers, initiates emergency care, medications, labs, x-rays. diagnostic tests, medical/mental health intake and referrals according to protocols
  • Administer first aid to patients, faculty, staff, and visitors as appropriate.
  • Consult with medical providers in areas outside of RN scope of practice.
  • Demonstrate sound decision making and problem solving in all areas of performance.
  • Maintain thorough working knowledge and safe administration of SHC clinic medications including emergency drugs, IV fluids and naloxone (Narcan).
  • Independently counsel patients in an objective nonjudgmental manner related to Family Planning, Medication Abortion, Sexual and Reproductive health, and LGBTQ care.
  • Independently determine infection risk at Triage, direct staff to room patients within pandemic guidelines, has working knowledge of available daily patient and staff resources to streamline patient care.
  • Serve as triage nurse making first contact with, assessing, and directing flow of patients and independently answering questions from reception, MAS, RNS, and Providers. This includes assuring that patients are assessed, interviewed, checked in, and safely discharged following appointments; that appointments are well monitored and tracked in the EMR.

35% - Clinic Duties:

  • Triage patients based on clinical findings; begin treatment and work-up as appropriate.
  • Administer medications and collaborate with medical team on the effectiveness of oral/medical injections/inhalation treatments.
  • In concert with medical providers. responds to emergencies, including allergic reactions, fainting, vomiting, respiratory/cardiac arrest.
  • Room patients; take vital signs; record clinical assessment; provide treatments as appropriate (such as, wound care, dressing changes, removal of stitches according to protocol, splinting, eye or ear irrigation, throat swabs, small volume nebulizer treatments, EKGs), assist with minor surgical procedures, perform IV insertions, fluids/medications as ordered; monitor, maintain and assess effectiveness of therapy in collaboration with medical team.
  • Provide prefab orthopedic supplies, crutches, custom made splints and give instructions on use written and verbal.
  • Manage Travel and Positive TB Consults in concert with medical provider.
  • Independently manage reproductive needs utilizing RN protocols (work collaboratively with patient to meet their need for birth control and STI protection). Provide follow-up care within RN scope of practice.
  • Provide education and counseling to pregnant patients, including pregnancy options as well as resources and referrals.
  • Independently interview patients in regard to STI exposure, and utilize RN protocols to order labs, offer treatment, and independently provide follow-up care per protocol.
  • Initiate specific lab Orders and give results per protocol (such as UA dip and urine pregnancy test: self-collected wet mount and Chlamydia Gonorrhea urine, throat, vagina and rectal: HIV, RPR, & Hep B blood tests: Quantiferon Gold; titers for MMR and Varicella).
  • Coordination, collaboration, and provision of student immunization monitoring and TB surveillance.
  • Close clinic at end of the day, making sure that patients have left and if not, staying until they have left.
  • Responsible for complete legal records documenting nursing clinical care.
  • Consult and communicate with nursing supervisor or medical director as appropriate.
  • Ensure availability of medical supplies in exam rooms; notify purchaser of low stock.
  • Ensure that medications and clinical treatment trays are current.
  • Ensure backpack medications and emergency supply areas are stocked and within expiration period.
  • Monitor security of clinic medications and ensure handling is done according to protocols determined by the Pharmacist-in-Charge.

20% - Administrative / Other:

  • Manage programs, such as immunizations & TB screening and assure adherence to regulations.
  • Monitor clinical processes required for compliance with accreditation standards and state legislative, and CO regulations.
  • Participate in developing & implementing policies and procedures, particularly in realms of expertise (e.g. family planning, medication-based abortions).
  • Assist Nursing Supervisor in training new staff and assist with preceptorship students (including being shadowed).
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with SHWS colleagues and external medical services (including Planned Parenthood, Public Health, and local hospitals).
  • Serve on SHC committees, such as Quality Improvement, Infection Control, and Search Committees for new hires.
  • Actively participate in staff meetings, case reviews and in-house training activities.
  • Participate in Peer Review and help to problem solve deficits.
  • Use and help improve patient education resources and handouts.
  • Monitor vaccine refrigerator (temperature, expiration dates) and medication supplies (including those in emergency backpacks) and arrange for proper disposal of expired material
  • Engage in professional development in areas of importance to college health and maintain an unencumbered license to practice nursing in the state of California.
  • Provide input for support staff annual evaluations.
  • Responsible for employee immunization records; notifies staff of annual immunization requirements; meets with new employees to record immunization information and provide vaccines as appropriate; confers with director and/or medical director regarding employee compliance.

5% - Other Duties as Assigned

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Associated with this Position Include:  

  • Thorough knowledge of professional nursing principles, methods, and procedures;
  • Thorough knowledge of anatomy and physiology applicable to assigned duties;
  • Thorough knowledge of medical supplies and equipment used in nursing practice;
  • Thorough knowledge of the uses and effects of medications and narcotics.
  • Working knowledge of applicable state and federal laws and regulations pertaining to registered nursing and the scope of practice limitations of clinic support staff.
  • Possess broader and specialized nursing knowledge that supports the performance of specialized duties in such areas as, but not limited to, triage and assessment, patient counseling, and staffing specialized nursing clinics;
  • Broader knowledge of clinic operations and the development and implementation of a nursing program, including procedures and protocols.
  • Ability to effectively apply nursing knowledge and demonstrate proper techniques and skills in performing nursing duties; Demonstrated ability to work independently.
  • Ability to accurately observe and record symptoms, behaviors, and reactions to treatments in order to make a nursing diagnosis;
  • Ability to respond with therapy to treatment reactions;
  • Ability to use applicable health center automated systems to perform duties and maintain records and prepare reports;
  • Ability to gain the cooperation of patients;
  • Ability to analyze emergency situations and take prompt action;
  • Ability to maintain patient confidentiality and privacy in compliance with applicable state and federal laws and regulations;
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with practitioners and other health center support staff;
  • Ability to be sensitive to and communicate effectively with patients from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to effectively apply specialized nursing skills.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. High School diploma or equivalent.
  2. Completion of a professional nursing program approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing.
  3. Possession of a valid license as Registered Nurse in the State of California.
  4. Current CPR/AED certification.
  5. One year of professional nursing experience which has provided evidence of the ability to work independently in specialized nursing activities and to support the overall nursing program within the Student Health Center; or equivalent education & experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of reproductive health including birth control options, FamilyPact, and medication abortions.
  • Knowledge of travel health.
  • Experience with gender affirming care.
  • Knowledge of and experience with mental health.
  • Expertise with splinting and wound care.
