This position is located at the Perquimans Juvenile Detention Center
in Hertford, NC (Perquimans County)

This is an anticipated vacancy. This position is expected to be available on 03/01/2024.

This position provides nursing services to juvenile offenders and function as the full-time health care professional on site.


This position is for 1st shift Monday - Friday.

This position is responsible for:

  • providing health care in the treatment and/or prevention of illnesses and injuries.
  • performing the juveniles' admission physical assessments.
  • conducting sick call.
  • administering medications.
  • implementing physician treatment orders.
  • providing medication administration, training UAPs for medication administration and medication counseling for the juveniles.
  • writing medical discharge summaries.
  • providing emergency medical services.
  • health care reports to other disciplines regarding juvenile health status, maintain data reports and providing health related staff training.


This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) withState Benefits.

The salary grade for this position is MH15. State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as, or lower than, their current position. If selected for this position, a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience, funding availability, and internal equity. Based upon these factors, a pay increase MAY result.

The following are Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSA's) for a Registered Nurse:

  • Experience leading a team; skill in delegation of UAP and subordinate health care tasks and making assignments.
  • Experience providing feedback and advice/counsel to nursing staff/UAP on care rendered to patients.
  • Experience with basing judgments on facts and reasoning: to be open-minded, organized, systematic and inquisitive; to be reflective and self-monitoring; to be creative; and to demonstrate discernment of patients' complaints.
  • Experience working as a team player with multidisciplinary healthcare staff, facility and custody staff; to deliver services in an organized, timely and methodical manner, and to notify patient/client of how to access healthcare.
  • Experience effectively teaching nursing staff through orientation and on-the-job training; to precept subordinate staff on patient care and daily routines; and to provide support and assistance to peer/co-workers.
  • Experience using interview techniques that assist the patient/client in describing his/her symptoms and assisting in discerning the situation using an organizational approach, and to communicate information to patients, families and staff in a concise and descriptive manner: verbally, in writing, or by demonstration.
Management Preference:
  • Nursing experience in adolescent/pediatric/school or public health nursing.
  • Graduation from an accredited school of nursing and two years of nursing experience.

Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of North Carolina.
Necessary Special Qualifications:
Selected applicant must attend and successfully complete and pass the Juvenile Justice Officer Basic Training certification program. The certification requires four weeks to complete and is comprised of classroom and physically demanding training. This training is carried out at regional training centers and requires consecutive overnight stays. In addition the selected candidate must:

  • Have or be able to obtain required documentation for certification as a Juvenile Justice Officer (i.e. a diploma).
  • Pass a Criminal Background check
  • Pass a Drug Screening test
  • Pass a Psychological test
  • Pass a Sexual Risk Screening test
  • Pass a Physical
  • Be a US citizen
  • Be at least 20 years of age
  • Have a valid driver's license
