Position Overview

Hospital for Behavioral Medicine (HBM) specializes in mental health treatment. Our 120-bed inpatient facility is equipped with the latest safety features designed to provide patients with a comfortable environment to receive therapeutic care. Situated in Worcester County, Hospital for Behavioral Medicine is the newest mental health facility of its kind in the state of Massachusetts and is a joint venture between HBM and UMass Memorial Health Care. A short drive from the UMass Memorial Medical Center, HBM is designed to serve members of the community both near and far.

We also offer ourpatients an outpatient program with the goal of not interrupting their personal life or responsibilities to seek treatment. Our partial hospitalization program (or PHP for short) takes place Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM (lunch is provided), and includes: group therapy, recreation therapy, and weekly consultation with a psychiatrist. We provide this asan option for continuation of inpatient treatment or to learn more about their symptoms and receive support from peers. Receiving inpatient treatment is not a requirement for joining our outpatient services. Our outpatient services may be helpful for patientswho are in need of help due to depression, anxiety, self-injury behavior, or other issues needing immediate treatment.

Position Details:

  • Full-time & Part-Time Availability

  • Avilability on 1st & 2nd Shift with some availability on 3rd shift

The Staff Nurse (Registered Nurse) is a registered professional nurse who prescribes, coordinates, and evaluates patient care through collaborative efforts with health team members in accordance with the nursing process and the standards of care and practices.

STANDARDS OF PERFORMANCE

THE ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS ARE CATEGORIZED UNDER THE JOINT COMMISSION STANDARDS OF PERFORMANCE.

Assessment

  1. Document patient information and nursing care in the provision of nursing services.
  2. Document and reassess any significant changes in the patient's condition in compliance withfacility policy.
  3. Report any signs or symptoms of infection in patients to the Infection Control Nurse.
  4. Verify the accuracy of patient records.

Intervention

  1. Employ principles of communication, interviewing techniques, problem solving and crisis intervention when performing psychotherapeutic interventions.
  2. Intervention is based on knowledge of psychiatric and medical nursing procedures, as well asthe plan of care.
  3. Accurately administer medication to patients.
  4. Transcribe and carry out physician's/licensed practitioner's treatment orders accurately.
  5. Utilize appropriate interventions in psychiatric and medical emergencies.

Treatment Planning

  1. Prioritize and formulate a plan of care based on patient assessment and according to policy.
  2. Participate in the development of an interdisciplinary treatment plan with specific andmeasurable goals, objectives and interventions defining actions unique to each patient's needs.
  3. Update and revise the plan as goals/objectives are met or when the patient's condition changes.
  4. Document both the nursing interventions on the treatment plan and the patient's response to theintervention.

Milieu

  1. Assure patients are adequately oriented to the program.
  2. Monitor program activity and encourage patient participation.
  3. Prescribe and coordinate nursing care to patients, during episode of care.
  4. Provide structure and maintain a therapeutic environment in collaboration with the patient and other health care providers.
  5. Consistently utilize universal precautions and environmental safety guidelines.
  6. Conduct structured didactic groups with patients and families.
  7. Utilize self as a role model to promote health communication.

Teaching

  1. Provide education to patients and families based on their identified needs and limitations, suchas, communication, interpersonal and social skills as well as basic principles of physical health.
  2. Provides and documents discharge instructions including food and drug interactions, diets andactivities as appropriate.
  3. Evaluate and document the effectiveness of all patient teaching.
  4. Provide opportunities for patients and families to question, discuss and explore their feelingsabout prescribed therapies/interventions/diagnosis.

Performance

  1. Participate in quality assurance programs.
  2. Collaborate with other team members.
  3. Act as the patient's advocate and assure that patient rights are upheld.
  4. Comply with established measures for infection control, OSHA regulations and riskmanagement.
  5. Utilize time constructively and in an organized manner to accomplish assigned responsibilities.
  6. Demonstrate guest relations in communication, cooperation and in giving assistance to patients,physicians/licensed practitioners, co-workers and visitors in a prompt and courteous manner.
  7. Follow facility, departmental and personnel policies and procedures
  8. Comply with the employee Code of Ethics.
  9. Works overtime in a case of emergency or as deemed necessary by supervisor.
  10. Attends mandatory educational programs and annual in-services.
  11. Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by supervisor.

Specific Standards for the Care of Child Patients Ages 5 through 11

  1. Maintain knowledge of the Child Program rules, protocols and handbooks guidelines.
  2. Maintain knowledge of children's stages of development and seek guidance from the nurse in charge when questions about the norms for behavior related to child development arise.
  3. Assess patients for behaviors consistent with the developmental stages and make note of anydeviations in behavior.
  4. Recognize acting out behavior of child specific age group and set appropriate limits in clear, concise,behavioral and non-judgmental terms based on the age of the patient.
  5. Demonstrate an awareness of learning disabilities and translates treatment/program expectations tothe learning disabled child.
  6. Relate to child patients in an age appropriate manner.
  7. Utilize seclusion and restraint procedures with an understanding of the need for modification in regardto smaller body sizes of children, abandonment issues and the history of physical and/or sexual abuse issues.
  8. Act as a resource to other staff in regard to the Child Patient Programs.

Specific Standards for the Care of Adolescent Patients Ages 12 through 18

  1. Maintain knowledge of the Adolescent Program rules, protocols and handbooksguidelines.
  2. Assess patients for behaviors consistent with the developmental stages and makes of any deviations in behavior.
  3. Recognize acting out behavior of adolescent specific age group and set appropriate limits in clear,concise, behavioral and non-judgmental terms based on the age of the patient.
  4. Demonstrate an awareness of learning disabilities and translates treatment/program expectations to the learning disabled adolescent.
  5. Relate to adolescent patients in an age appropriate manner.
  6. Utilize seclusion and restraint procedures with an understanding of the need for modification in regard to smaller body sizes of adolescents, abandonment issues and the history of physical and/or sexual abuse issues.
  7. Act as a resource to other staff in regard to the Adolescent Patient Programs.

Specific Standards for the Care of Adult Patients Ages 19 through 64

  1. Gather information from the patient, family and interdisciplinary team and use judgments based onknowledge of adult behaviors in treatment planning and interventions.
  2. Recognize behaviors and set appropriate limits in clear, concise, behaviors and non-judgmental terms.
  3. Utilize seclusion/restraint procedures applicable to adult body size and past history of violent oremotional behaviors and/or history of physical and/or sexual abuse issues.
  4. Maintain current knowledge of the Adult Program rules, protocols and handbook guidelines.
  5. Utilize theoretical concepts to guide the effective practice of adult care within Specific Standards of Care for this age group.

Specific Standards for the Care of Geriatric Patients Ages 65 and older

  1. Maintain a knowledge of the developmental tasks and sociological theories of aging.
  2. Utilize theoretical concepts to guide the effective practice of gerontological health careand behavioral care.
  3. Gather the appropriate information from the patient, family and interdisciplinary team and use therapeutic judgments based on knowledge of gerontological health/behavioral care practices to develop a comprehensive plan of care.
  4. Utilize interventions based on gerontological theory to restore patient functional capabilities and toprevent complications and excess disability.
  5. Maintain a complete knowledge of treatments, medications and side effects of such in the geriatric age group.

Specific Standards for the Care of Chemically Dependent Patients

  1. Assesses patient needs as related to chemical dependency and document the plan of care from the admission through discharge.
  2. Collaborate with other chemical dependency staff professionals in planning for discharge and follow-up care.
  3. Maintain an awareness of how personal issues relating to co-dependency can impact workperformance/relationships.
  4. Recognize and establish limits on medication-seeking behaviors.

Additional Standards

  1. Adhere to facility, department, corporate, personnel and standard policies and procedures.
  2. Attend all mandatory facility in-services and staff development activities as scheduled.
  3. Adhere to facility standards concerning conduct, dress, attendance and punctuality.
  4. Support facility-wide quality/performance improvement goals and objectives.
  5. Maintain confidentiality of facility employees and patient information.

Qualifications

Education: Graduate from an accredited program of professional nursing required; Bachelor'sDegree preferred.

Experience: A minimum of three (3) years' experience in a psychiatric health-care facility preferred.

Licensure: Currently licensed to practice by the Massachusetts State Board of Nursing.

Additional Requirements: Must pass a medication administration exam before administering medications. CPR certification and successful completion of Management of Aggressive Behavior including restraint and seclusion policies, within 30 days of employment, and prior to assisting in restraining procedures.
