POSITION PURPOSE:
Float Nurse position requires scheduling flexibility and will include:
Med/Surg/ER Nursing
This position must cover open nursing shifts as a result of nurse vacancies, illness, or PTO and must be able to effectively perform nursing duties within the med/surg and emergency departments. Inpatient nursing requires knowledge of nursing process, prioritization, policy & procedure to effectively care for emergent, acute, and skilled patient populations of varying age.
Outpatient nursing
This position must provide back-up coverage and works in coordination with multiple departments including medical records, pharmacy billing, lab, radiology, materials management, and nursing to ensure/acquire appropriate prior authorization, supplies, equipment, appointments, and medications for outpatients.
Perioperative nursing
This position will support our operating room and will be responsible for assisting with pre-op, intra-op and post-op.
In the operating room the perioperative nurse may serve as a scrub nurse, selecting and passing instruments and supplies used for the operation, or as a circulating nurse managing the overall nursing care in the operating room and helping to maintain a safe, comfortable environment. The perioperative nurse will also assist in preparing charts/documentation for surgical and/or clinic outpatients.
When needed, this position will assume responsibility of a sterile processing technician assuring all equipment and supplies are sterilized according to manufacture guidelines.

What you will do:
- Provide high level customer service across service lines utilizing the nursing process.
- Adheres to the principles of caring and Nursing in Credo expected behaviors. Fostering a climate where all customers are treated in a manner consistent with MercyOne Elkader Medical Center's Mission and Values.
- Maintains a working knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and local laws and regulations, Compliance & Integrity Program, Standards of Conduct, as well as other policies and procedures in order to ensure adherence in a manner that reflects honest, ethical, and professional behavior.
- Working with patients prior to surgery to complete paperwork and help answer questions or calm fears about surgery.
- Monitoring a patient's condition during and after surgery
- Assist the surgical team by donning gloves and gowns as well as selecting and passing instruments and supplies to the surgeon during procedures.
- Educating patients on best practices for recovery, including pain management and keeping wounds clean.
- Cleaning surgical equipment and operating room to maintain a sterile environment.
- Organize patient scheduling and service coordination for operating room service line in collaboration with ancillary departments assuring CAH regulations/facility policy are met and followed.
- Maintain timely/accurate documentation and communication to keep the referring/ordering provider informed of the patient's status.
- Maintain process competency in the management of outpatient nursing visits assuring prior authorization is completed, resources are available, patient scheduling is complete, and planning/documentation is shared with med/surg staff.
- Assist in pre, intra, and post-operative care delivery by assuring all necessary documentation is completed; the patient is properly prepped; monitoring of patient during and after surgery for safe discharge.
- Assist with surgical clinic as directed by outpatient service director.
- Have knowledge of and/or assist in the development and implementation of plan of care for patients across all departments.
- Assist with departmental quality improvement initiatives and monitor as directed.
What we are looking for:
- Registered Nurse in the State of Iowa
- 2-5 years nursing experience on Medical/Surgical unit and in perioperative services.
- Ability to interpret cardiac arrhythmias.
- Excellent communication and customer service skills.
- Must be able to function independently and in collaboration with other health care professionals.
- Certified in BLS within the first 30 days, ACLS, PALS, NRP, & TNCC within the first year.
- Child and Dependent Adult Abuse Mandatory Reporter Training is required within 6 months of hire and every 3 years thereafter.
