As part of our continued growth, we have a new opportunity for a Senior Medical Director to join our leadership team based in Eugene, OR.  

Job Overview:

The Regional Senior Medical Director ("Executive Medical Director" or EMD) for Primary Care Operations is the leader of the Optum OR employed groups physician and APC staff, providing strategic leadership for medical operations. This position is the accountable leader for management of clinician culture, financial performance, clinical strategy, medical staff, and driving clinical excellence. The Regional Senior Medical Director also embraces PNW (OR and WA) Optum Enterprise strategy and goals and works with partners across the enterprise to achieve those goals with a holistic focus on enterprise value and success.

Position Highlights:

  • Develop and recommend to the Regional Executive Leadership plans for growth and development.
  • Partner with the Regional CMIO and IT/EPIC to ensure the availability of timely and meaningful information for clinical decision support.
  • Create and implement a Clinician leadership development plan.
  • Ensure appropriate performance of Clinician leaders.
  • Manage the budget for Clinician leadership.
  • Promote a balanced agenda of patient experience, quality/patient safety, cost effectiveness, FFS and value financial performance, and clinician engagement.
  • Facilitate effective communications among stakeholders.
  • Align Oregon CDO operations to deliver on the strategic plan for Optum OR and PNW enterprise.
  • In partnership with the Office of Clinician Engagement and clinician practice leads, set overall direction for clinician and organizational culture with advice and consent of Regional Executive Leadership.
  • Support and ensure the highest possible ethical standards in all CDO activities.
  • Ensure appropriate monitoring and improvement of organizational culture.
  • Work with employed groups and network to create and support an enterprise culture.
  • Effective Medical Personnel Management
    • Recruitment, mentoring and retention of high-quality physicians and APCs.
    • Appropriate standards and expectations for professional performance.
    • Effective balanced scorecard.
    • Coaching, counseling, and performance management, when needed, for clinicians.
    • Systems of support for clinician well-being and engagement
  • Best Practice in:
    • Clinical Team Experience and Clinician Engagement

Required Qualifications:

  • Unrestricted OR Physician Licenseor ability to obtain.
  • Masters required in Management (MBA, Master of Medical Management [MMM], Sequoia program, Master of Public Health [MPH]) or equivalent.
  • Minimum 10 years' experience in Leadership.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience in applying and integrating Lean principles and practices to improve work   processes and performance. Knowledge and use of Lean tools and practices including Daily Management System, A3 Problem, Solving, and One Page Project Management.
  • Advanced leadership skills. Strong coaching and problem-solving skills to help teams resolve challenges with daily workflow and performance to goals.
  • Expert business knowledge with comprehensive understanding of organization and functional area(s), in-depth knowledge of industry and external environment. Knowledge of Medicare criteria.
