Job Description
The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources Southern Region office is seeking a Regional Aquatics Biologist. This position presents exciting opportunities to channel your love of the outdoors and improve fisheries resources. As a regional aquatic biologist, you will work with the Southern Region aquatics team to monitor, manage, and improve southern Utah's native and sport fish populations.
Principal Duties
As the Regional Aquatics Biologist you will:
- Conduct field surveys to monitor fish populations and aquatic invasive species in Southern Utah.
- Analyze biological data, interpret results, write reports summarizing findings, and develop management recommendations. Effectively communicate biological information with other biologists and members of the public.
- Supervise and train seasonal technicians.
- Work cooperatively with biologists from other agencies and conservation organizations.
- Participate in fish removal and introduction projects.
- Participate in fish habitat improvement.
- Oversee the implementation of the regional aquatic invasive species early detection program.
The Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate has:
- Bachelor of Science degree in fish biology, aquatics sciences, or related field of study.
- Work experience with fish and aquatic invasive species found in Utah, standard monitoring techniques, and management practices.
- Good communication skills and ability to articulate fisheries management concepts to the public.
- The ability to work independently, as well as a member of a team, and to supervise and mentor assistants.
*Preference will be given to candidates with a bachelor's degree in a natural resources field. Additional preference will be given to candidates with a master's degree in an aquatics-related natural resources field or other applicable field that is beneficial for the position.Preference for years of demonstrated successful full-time work experience will vary based on the specific position.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities -
Requirements -
- Bachelor's degree in fisheries or related field, or directly related work experience equivalent
- Good writing skills
- Basic understanding of fisheries management techniques
- Ability to analyze and interpret freshwater fisheries data
- Driver's license
- Effective communication skills
- Master's degree in fisheries or related field
- Experience operating and maintaining boats and off-highway vehicles
- Experience with the fish species common to Utah and aquatics invasive species that pose the greatest threat to Utah waters
Working Conditions:
Work may be performed in extreme and adverse weather conditions (heat, wind, snow, ice, rain, etc.) Risks that require the use of special safety precautions and/or equipment, e.g., working around operating machines, working with contagious diseases or hazardous chemicals, etc. Work requires physical exertion. May require the ability to stand; walk over rough surfaces; bend, crouch, stoop, stretch, reach, lift heavy items (up to 75 lbs.) in a recurring manner and/or for long periods of time. Must be able to operate 4-wheel drive vehicles, OHVs, and operate motorboats.
Work Schedule:
This is a full-time position 40 hours a week (Monday - Friday, 8; 00 am - 5:00 pm). Occasionally requires irregular hours, including evenings, weekends and holidays as needed during the field season, with occasional overtime. Overnight travel within Utah, and occasionally outside of the state, is required to attend meetings, conferences, wildlife management projects and activities, etc.
Requirements:
Valid driver's license. Certified non-commercial pesticide applicator license to be obtained upon employment. Must reside in or relocate to Iron or Washington counties.
