Established in 1970, SVCC is one of the 23 colleges in the Virginia Community College System. The College serves ten counties and one city - the largest community college service region in the state. The College as one Extension Campus located in Keysville, VA, and also has five Educational Centers located across the service area. The college is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award Associate degrees. SVCC is located in a rural setting of rolling hills, pine and hardwood forests, and farmland. There is easy access to nearby metropolitan Richmond, Virginia, the state's capital, as well as Raleigh, North Carolina, and Lynchburg, Virginia. The area is famous for its two lakes, Gaston and Kerr, and a multitude of state and national parks which offer recreational opportunities such as fishing, boating, skiing, jet-skiing, hiking, horseback riding, picnics, and relaxation. The area also offers sports arenas for baseball, softball, soccer and beautiful golf courses. There are cultural activities including various theaters and arts councils offering concerts, plays, and live entertainment, and there are many local festivals held throughout the year.
We are seeking a full-time Regional Adult Education Specialist.
The Regional Adult Education Specialist supports Adult Educational priorities and initiatives as identified by the Virginia Department of Education's Office of Adult Education and Literacy. The Specialist will assist with assessment and administration of the Tests of Adult Basic Education (TABE) to program participants throughout the service region. The Regional Adult Education Specialist will work with local partners, One-Stop Workforce Centers, the College, local employers, and school divisions to promote Adult Education and literacy initiatives.
Some of the responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Communicate regularly with Regional Adult Education Program Manager, instructional staff, and ABE/GED teachers throughout the region as well as on a state level
  • Assist with TABE testing throughout the regions and use results to counsel clients
  • Provide career counseling to enrolled students
  • Assist with developing a marketing/outreach plan to promote the Adult Education program to potential students and other stakeholders
  • Assist with professional development opportunities for instructors and staff
  • Assist with developing new IET programs and maintain tracking sheet for credentials

Special Assignments
May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
KSA's/Required Qualifications
  • Valid driver's license and ability to provide own transportation, occasionally, when state vehicles are not available
  • Experience with Career Counseling
  • Experience planning and organizing local community events
  • Experience working with computer applications and databases, such as the Microsoft Office Suite, Google Workspace, and Peoplesoft or similar student registration software program
  • Working knowledge of the workforce development system, operations, and linkages
  • Knowledge and understanding of the network of available resources and how to access them
  • Knowledge of specific competencies needed for career readiness, both for specific jobs and for job readiness in general, including but not limited to job search skills, resume writing skills, interview skills, and professional soft skills
  • Knowledge of GED eligibility requirements
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Excellent customer service skills, including the ability to effectively follow up and follow through
  • Effective communication and marketing skills
  • Effective problem-solving skills
  • Ability to build networks and establish effective working partnerships with a variety of partners, including business and industry and workforce development
  • Ability to provide student services, such as assessment, evaluation, counseling and registration in a professional manner, resolving routine conflicts and providing confidential advising when appropriate
  • Requires the ability to administer the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) tests, and any other Adult Education assessments within appropriate standards
  • Ability to assess the skills, needs, interests, and aptitudes of clients and provide personalized advice and guidance on career development
  • Understanding of the specific needs of area employers
  • Strong interpersonal skills to help engage, provide support, and motivate customers
