GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK:
Performs intermediate skilled work in the regular operation of trucks, tractors and related equipment, performs responsible unskilled and semiskilled work on a variety of maintenance and repair projects and does related work as required. Work is performed under regular supervision.
This is heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for depth perception, peripheral vision, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions, and oils.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS:
Operates a variety of trucks, tractors and related equipment and performs responsible unskilled and semiskilled work maintaining and repairing public facilities.
Operates a truck in the performance of a variety of tasks including street maintenance, brush collection, leaf collection, and related activities;
Drives a tractor to mow public and park areas; plows and picks up leaves;
Operates snow plowing and ice control equipment; operates riding lawnmower, pick-up truck with trailer and similar automotive equipment;
Operates in a safe manner and uses all appropriate ‘Work Zone Safety Guidelines’ when placing cones and signs for traffic safety;
Removes tree stumps; performs a variety of landscaping tasks; weeds flower beds;
Trims trees and hedges; chips brush; edges curbs and sidewalks; prunes trees;
Plants trees, flowers, shrubs, etc.; works ground around trees, shrubs and flowers;
Performs a variety of other heavy manual work in connection with the maintenance of streets and parks;
Operates a scooter in the collection of rubbish;
Services rubbish containers at various locations in City;
Removes fallen limbs and dead trees from parks; trims trees;
Shovels and rakes asphalt paving mix in street repairs;
Operates spreader box and asphalt roller; operates stump grinder; zero turn mowers, push mowers, blowers, weed trimmers, tillers and edgers;
Performs minor maintenance work on equipment, such as daily and weekly greasing;
Inspects equipment for safety prior to operating;
Performs a variety of maintenance and repair tasks when not operating equipment;
Performs other related tasks as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
General knowledge of the principles and practices of operating a variety of trucks and tractors; general knowledge of the traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation; general knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary to the proper operation of varied trucks and tractors; skill in the use of equipment to which assigned; ability to understand and follow oral and written directions; ability to perform manual labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions; ability to lift heavy articles; ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates. Individual must be able to coordinate the activities of seasonal laborers that are occasionally assigned to them.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and some experience in performance of heavy manual work and/or operation of motorized equipment.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Individual must possess a valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License with air brake endorsement valid in the State of Ohio. Candidates are subject to pre- and post-employment drug and alcohol testing.
