Description
General Description: This is a field position. The incumbent performs routine tasks and fieldwork to include planning, implementation and supervision of recreation programs, community events and facilities operations.
Organization:The Recreation Supervisor reports to the Recreation Coordinator or Recreation Program Director and may supervise Recreation Aides, Therapeutic Recreation Aides, and/or Leaders-In Training.
Essential Functions:
  • Assists with the planning and implementation of recreation programs.
  • Serves as a leader/facilitator in staff training.
  • May assist with the selection of staff.
  • Oversees Recreation Aides, Therapeutic Recreation Aides, and/or Leaders-In Training, performing related human resources functions and completing necessary paperwork as needed.
  • Facilitates staff meetings and training as needed.
  • Serves as the contact person for recreation programs.
  • Maintains accurate records and reports.
  • Coordinates and leads programs and activities Program areas might include sports, games, arts & crafts, nature, music, and/or cultural arts.
  • Manages the inventory control, management, set up, breakdown and care of recreation supplies, equipment and program area.
  • Performs related work as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of community youth recreation planning and implementation is required.
  • Must be able to plan, manage and evaluate work independently, maintaining accurate records and reports.
  • Must be able to direct, supervise and evaluate staff.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships is required.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to follow workplace policies, procedures, and work plans
  • Ability to work with the general public and provide satisfactory customer service
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of participants while enforcing behavioral standards and program policies

Education, Experience and Training:Two (2) years of college and two (2) years of recreation experience are preferred.
Special Conditions:
  • Criminal Records Check, including fingerprinting.
  • CPR/First Aid Certification
  • Valid Commonwealth of Virginia Driver's License
  • Mandatory participation in staff trainings

Special Instructions to Applicants
This position is a part-time position. Employees will be scheduled to work summer camps, community events and/or year-round recreation programs based on scheduled offerings.
Employees selected for summer camps will be required to complete online and scheduled in-person trainings and available to work the majority of scheduled summer camps.
During the application process, the applicant will provide availability for the summer.
  • Mandatory training will take place beginning early June
  • Camps scheduled to be offered from mid-June through early August
Employee work schedules and location assignments are based on camper enrollment and are subject to change.
Selected candidates will be invited via email for interview (to be held in March and April).
Employees who worked in 2023 that wish to be considered for employment in 2024 must apply by January 15, 2024, in order to be considered for automatic rehire.
