$18.75/hour, plus $1000 housing allowance (equivalent to $24.52/hr for 40 hr work week)

Position Title
Recreation Specialist Resource Assistant
Position Details
Stewards Individual Placement Program (Stewards) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health.
The Coronado National Forest, Santa Catalina Ranger District is part of the US Department of Agriculture. The mission of the Forest Service is to sustain the health, diversity, and productivity of the nation's forests and grasslands to meet the needs of present and future generations. The Santa Catalina Ranger District includes some of the premier natural areas in the Sonoran Desert including Sabino Canyon. The area hosts approximately 2 million visits each year.
Stewards in partnership with the Coronado National Forest is seeking an intern who will serve on the visitor services team at Sabino Canyon Recreation Area and also supports partnerships with a number of nonprofit organizations. This position supports vital functions like visitor contact, fee collection, and partnership development.
Position Responsibilities will include:
This Resource Assistant position provides support for the Santa Catalina District's Visitor Services and Fee team centered at the Sabino Canyon Visitor Center. It also helps with coordination of the District's
partnership and volunteer programs. Duties include: Provide district level support to planning and
implementation of complex recreation programs including dispersed, developed, wilderness, trails,
motorized, and forest programs.
  • Provide supervision and oversight for recreation management projects. Participate in grant writing, grants and agreements management, planning, project development, and project implementation.
  • Provide supervision and oversight for the recreation fees collection program. Ensure compliance with Forest Service, Region 3, Coronado National Forest and district level policies and procedures.
  • Analyzes and interprets data to formulate recommendations that achieve management objectives and policies and suggests alternative methods for achieving objectives.
  • Provides program input into a variety of natural resources management planning processes including NEPA. Coordinates with other natural resource disciplines to ensure program requirements are included in the project planning and execution.
  • Participates in recruitment and management of volunteer groups and other partnerships including establishing agreements, terms of service, and reimbursement of expenses when applicable.

Minimum Requirements:
  • Must have a valid driver's license and be insurable by Conservation Legacy (over 21 years old or drivers license for at least three years).
  • Demonstrated interest in natural resource management or recreation management.
  • Ability to obtain an associate degree or higher before end of term to be eligible for Direct Hire Authority.

Preferred Requirements:
  • Experience with visitor use management in a developed recreation site
  • Interest in long term employment with the Coronado National Forest

*The USFS Resource Assistant Program (RAP) is a rigorous, immersive, paid internship providing developmental and training opportunities for individuals interested in learning more about Forest Service careers. After completing a minimum of 960 hours of satisfactory work and an associate degree, RA's may acquire a two-year certificate of noncompetitive hiring eligibility. The certificate enables participants to apply to internal merit announcements for qualifying permanent General Schedule FS positions as well as a Direct Hire Authority for FS Career positions.
