Job description

Position Summary
Thousands of children need extra help to read at grade level. Take action as a tutor because kids who are strong readers by the end of 3rd grade are positioned to be strong learners for the rest of their lives.
As a Teacher in Training, you'll help students in kindergarten through third grade to become better readers while simultaneously pursuing your Master's Degree in Education through the University of Minnesota. Every day, you'll meet with students one-on-one or in pairs to provide extra practice and build skills. In addition to tutoring, you'll also complete 36 hours of coursework over two years, field observations and student teaching through the University of Minnesota.
With training and onsite coaching, we'll prepare you to help kids succeed and become a great educator. We are currently recruiting for the 2023-24 program year with opportunities beginning in August.
This is an AmeriCorps member position with Reading Corps and you'll be joining a team of nearly 2,000 tutors nationwide. Together, we're on a mission because kids who read have the power to succeed!
Since this position is part of a program developed through a formal partnership with Reading Corps and the University of Minnesota, any information you provide on this application and throughout the interview and selection process will be shared with both organizations.
What to Expect
  • Use proven strategies to help students build their skills and confidence.
  • Collaborate with coaches to monitor student progress and see what's working.
  • Conduct skill assessments and enter student scores into data management software.
  • Respond to feedback and commit to continuous improvement through coaching, training and professional development.
  • Represent Reading Corps at school-sponsored activities and share your experience with the wider community to help build awareness.

Perks Package
Teachers in Training receive a perks package that includes:
  • A stipend of $1,100 paid every 2 weeks
    • $23,100 total for 1200 hours of service starting in August 2023
  • Up to $4,826 for tuition or student loans*
  • Federal student loan forbearance and interest repayment
  • Individual health insurance - Monthly premium 100% covered
  • Child care assistance - Based on family size and income

*The Segal AmeriCorps Education Award can be used to pay tuition or repay qualified student loans. Individuals 55+ at the start of their service term may gift their award to their child, grandchild, foster child or step-child.
What it Takes
Reading Corps takes ordinary people and trains them to be great tutors. Anyone can become a tutor as long as they have a passion to take action for kids - and meet the following minimum qualifications.
By the time they begin their service, our tutors are:
  • Committed to serve for two full terms
  • Dependable and have a history of good attendance
  • Able to understand and follow instructions
  • Open to making improvements based on feedback
  • Capable of setting a pace and maintaining a schedule with students
  • Competent with basic computer skills (like email and navigating online)
  • Fluent in English for speaking, reading, and writing
  • 18 years of age or older with bachelor's degree
  • A citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident of the United States*
  • Able to successfully complete a background check

*Applicants who have received deferred action for childhood arrivals (DACA) through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security are not eligible to serve as AmeriCorps members at this time.
