Powell Butte Community Charter School is seeking enthusiastic, smart, and committed Reading Teacher to ensure Kindergarten through third grade students have strong foundational skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening.
Powell Butte Community Charter School is a rural, place-based public Charter School located in beautiful Central Oregon. PBCCS opened in 2010 and serves 220 students in grades K-8. Currently, PBCCS employs 22 staff members which includes teachers, support staff and administration.
The majority of PBCCS students are from the farming and ranching community of Powell Butte, the city of Prineville and surrounding areas. Our school is committed to offering an alternative instructional approach to education- Place Based Learning. Teacher teams are responsible for the development of an integrated place-based curriculum that includes project-based learning, outdoor fieldwork and travel studies. Our educators are skilled in facilitating place-based learning both in and out of the classroom.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Essential duties of this position include the following. Employees in this position perform some or all of the following tasks. Other duties may be assigned.
  1. Providing literacy-focused, small group of individualized reading instruction to students in grades K-3.
  2. Effectively provides children with a positive and meaningful school and reading experience, building confidence, knowledge and joy for learning.
  3. Have knowledge and understanding of practices that align with the "science of reading" and the explicit teaching of phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension through developmentally appropriate practices.
  4. Experience in using data to inform individualized instruction and continuously improve instructional design.
  5. Work with parents and caregivers and provide strategies and materials to support literacy development with their children.
  6. Teaches content and skills in alignment Oregon State standards for reading, utilizing school adopted curriculum with rigor, purpose, and strong planning.
  7. Builds strong positive partnerships and relationships with students, parents, colleagues, and partners.
  8. Actively supports and builds a strong positive school culture and learning environment.
  9. Is flexible and adapts to student and school needs.
  10. Designs and maintains an organized and effective student-friendly and student-centered classroom environment.
  11. Maintains a reflective, participatory and punctual teaching practice.
  12. Focused on making learning visible through effective and active student engagement.
  13. Works collaboratively with all team members including specialists to improve the instructional program.
  14. Effectively uses technology to support instruction and student learning.
  15. Evaluates and differentiates student progress and adapts individual programs to meet student needs.
  16. Actively participates in school activities including but not limited to: community events, open house, conference.
  17. Fulfills professional obligations of the professional growth and evaluation system for licensed educators.

MARGINAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Marginal duties of this position include the following. Employees in this position perform some or all of the following tasks. Other duties may be assigned.
  1. Report issues to authorities as necessary, such as child abuse.
  2. Reports safety, sanitary and fire hazards immediately to supervisor.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This position may supervise educational assistants, volunteers, and student aides. All school employees are responsible for supervising students and assisting in maintaining a safe environment at all times.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Education & Licensing: Must hold a valid Oregon Teaching License with the appropriate endorsement and authorization for the assignment. Licenses as determined by PBCCS including, a valid Oregon Driver License and ability to obtain a valid CPR/First Aid card.
  • Works well with others from diverse backgrounds. Focuses on solving conflict; maintaining confidentiality; listening to others without interrupting; keeping emotions under control; remaining open to others' ideas and contributing to building a positive team spirit.
  • Experience: Demonstrated ability to successfully teach children in the public school setting. Student teaching also applies.
  • Ability to communicate fluently verbally and in writing in English. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from students, parents, staff or members of the community. Ability to draft simple correspondence and some routine reports. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, verbal or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Proficiency in the usage of database software, internet software, and email. Ability to proficiently use the following programs: Google Docs, MS Word, Outlook, and Excel. Ability to type accurately and proficiently.
  • Ability to appropriately communicate with students, teachers, parents, members of the community and others including vendors, law enforcement and other agencies. Ability to exercise good judgment and work in an environment with constant interruptions. A belief that all students can learn.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Valid Oregon License and endorsement issued by Teacher Standards & Practices Commission

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master's Degree
  • Reading Endorsement or equivalent training or experience years teaching experience at the applicable grade levels
  • Experience teaching Oregon Common Cores State Standards
  • Proficient level performance evaluations
  • Positive recommendations from recent supervisors
  • Understanding and demonstrated experience working with children impacted by poverty.
  • Has knowledge and or experience working in inclusive settings.
