What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking a dedicated Systems Engineer to lead a team working on a multi-laboratory, large-scale field-experiment. This established, high-rigor experiment supports a program aimed at enhancing our nation's capabilities for monitoring underground nuclear explosions anywhere in the world. Our team is responsible for Systems Engineering, development and fielding of sub-surface instruments, data management, geologic site characterization, and management of surface instrumentation networks. Join us to develop creative solutions to unique natinal security challenges!

Over time, there will be opportunity to work with cross-disciplinary teams to identify and conceptually develop new technical work within Sandia's mission areas. This may be accomplished through participation and partnerships in future proposal calls. In this role, you will be responsible for increasing the impact and standing of these programs by producing high-quality results and performing work according to Sandia values.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Plan and coordinate with cross-organizational teams to negotiate and define system requirements.

  • Monitor business performance, report, and communicate to the project team and key partners.

  • Assess risk and lead collaboration to develop mitigation strategies.

  • Partner to develop security documentation and create program documents.

  • Contribute to the development of future experimental campaigns.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite. This position will require occasionally travel (4-5 trips/year) for program meetings, conferences, and experimental facilities.

Qualifications We Require:

  • Master's Degree in relevant STEM degree plus 4 years of relevant technical experience or a bachelor's degree in stated fields plus 9 years of relevant technical experience

  • Experience leading projects (e.g., cost, schedule, performance, risk management) and/or teams to successfully execute and deliver a product

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Active DOE clearance or equivalent

  • Ability to learn and implement new concepts.

  • Experience executing off-site field work.

  • Experience collaborating with diverse internal and external partners.

  • Experience in geosciences, geophysics, seismology, signal processing, Systems Engineering, or waveform technologies.

  • Proficiency with varied communication methods, including oral presentation, preparation of high-impact visual presentations, written reports, and the ability to communicate scientific and technical information at a level tailored the audience.

  • Experience operating independently, managing details, and proactively solving problems.

About Our Team:

We perform geophysical monitoring research and development in support of Sandia's mission as a national security laboratory. Our team's geophysics expertise addresses challenges surrounding ground-based nuclear detonation detection through next-generation algorithms exploiting multi-phenomenological data, advanced sensor technologies, and demonstration experiments.

Our team has a broad range of expertise in field seismology, subsurface characterization, seismo-acoustic and infrasound modeling; evaluation of seismic and infrasound sensors and systems; and the processing, analysis, and interpretation of all types of geophysical data. Technical work spans the spectrum from theoretical to applied and includes strong modeling, lab and field data collection, and analysis capabilities. The department serves as Sandia's resource for ground-based monitoring expertise, partnering with departments across the labs to integrate multiple types of data-including optical, seismic, electromagnetic, infrasound, atmospheric, radionuclide-to address broad national security needs.

Posting Duration:

This posting will be open for application submissions for a minimum of seven (7) calendar days, including the 'posting date'. Sandia reserves the right to extend the posting date at any time.

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.

EEO:

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, or veteran status and any other protected class under state or federal law.

NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs:

If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.

If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.
