Job Overview:
An individual in this temporary position performs routine laboratory, mechanical and/or technical tasks; and is expected to demonstrate increasingly more skill in conducting work during the internship duration. This individual also is beginning to take some initiative in contributing to the planning of laboratory experimentation. The position requires generally strong oversight and direction by a supervisor to both mentor scientific skills and guide duties.
Responsibilities:
- Performs routine laboratory experiments, tests, or other assignments according to explicit instructions (written and oral directions) and/or prescribed work methods; but not expected to demonstrate much independence in designing experiments or research.
- Operates standard experimental, processing, and/or testing equipment of moderate complexity.
- Generates and reports experimental data of moderate complexity; and receives close supervision when carrying out project tasks or research.
- May analyze experimental data with limited help of supervisor.
- May occasionally be assisted by other scientists when arranged by supervisor.
- Works through his/her supervisor on all matters requiring approval.
- Participates, with close supervisory oversight and approval, in outside activities including - contacts with customers, vendors, suppliers and universities.
- May demonstrate initiative in identifying project opportunities and proposing solutions to company problems with close supervisory input.
- May participate in technical and/or trade associations, instructional seminars and other activities on a limited basis to maintain and enhance his/her professional development with close supervisory input.
- Positive attitude about working in an industrial setting with initiative for learning new science.
- Basic computer software skills (documents, presentations, spreadsheets, graphics), and good observational and notebook recording.
- Reasonable math skills, including ability to perform rudimentary algebra / statistics.
- Initiative and capacity for mastering simple and progressively complex laboratory instruments.
- Capacity for independently undertaking more specialized and/or difficult tasks and training (including self-learning) during internship.
- Collegiate-level skills in both oral and written communications
Qualifications:
Education:
Minimum of first year as enrolled college student pursuing a B.S./B.A. in sciences (physical, biological, agricultural, engineering preferred), as well as enrolled in either a laboratory or field course.
OR
High school graduate, and minimum of 4+ years of experience using specific skill(s) with immediate applicability to company needs and/or projects.
