Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicine (J&J IM) is recruiting for a R&D Global Strategic Communications Leader support the Executive Vice President, Innovative Medicine, R&D, Johnson & Johnson, in implementing a new strategy to evolve our global R&D organization. This strategy focuses on enhancing R&D culture and talent, re-shaping the pipeline and expanding R&D skills and capabilities.

The global R&D organization has a leader with a new strategy to carry the organization into the future and ensure continued robust growth for J&J IM. R&D Communications, which supports this leader, must realign itself to support this strategy, educate and reinforce these messages to the global R&D organization, to Janssen and J&J, as well as to the external world.

This critical position, which reports to the Vice President, Global Portfolio Communications, is based in Spring House, PA.

The R&D Global Strategic Communications Leader strategizes and oversees the overall internal and external positioning of J&J IM’s R&D and Business Development enterprises, including organizational communications, pipeline/investor relations, leadership communications, visibility for strategic imperatives, culture and integration.

Responsibilities

  • Directly supports the EVP, Innovative Medicine, R&D’s Communication in overseeing and ensuring effective coordination, consistent processes and standards, thereby maximizing alignment, reputation and business value/output as well as the team’s capabilities, people development and return on investment for the R&D business
  • Identifies, plans, develops strategy for and implements a consistent and evolving stream of internal and high-impact external Strategic Communication for the EVP, Innovative Medicine, R&D, and Global Head of Business Development.
  • Supports unified portfolio storytelling in collaboration with the VP of Global Portfolio Communications.
  • Partners closely with Global Corporate Affairs colleagues supporting Enterprise R&D, Johnson & Johnson Innovation, JJDC, Inc., Global Health Equity, Media Relations, Workforce Communication, the Content Lab, Strategy & Insights and other groups to connect reputation-enhancing R&D activities to broader cohesive Corporate narrative; proactively works “outside the silo”
  • Leads planning and execution of highly complex programs communicating the Company’s stake and progress in Innovative Medicine, R&D through our assets, clinical milestones and speaking/interview activities at major internal and external events, speaking engagements and other major activities
  • Leads/supports highly impactful, sensitive quarterly financial result communications, analyst presentation, partnership, deal, M&A, and other financial- and Investor Relations (IR)-related communication involving Innovative Medicine, R&D
  • Drives workforce engagement strategies to inspire and increase the productivity of the R&D organization across global sites, integrating R&D strategic imperatives throughout the organization and into TAs and Functions. The R&D strategic evolution and global footprint require a strong sense of meaningful culture among colleagues and partners; this position aligns, motivates and supervises the Global Strategic Communications team to deliver these imperatives
  • Helps the Global Portfolio Communications team deliver for the business and to strengthen Innovative Medicine Communication & Public Affairs
  • Develops strong relationships and acts as a trusted advisor to R&D Senior Leadership Team members; coaches and guides them to develop their ability to engage and inspire the organization and external audiences in a diverse, global environment
  • Partners with Investor Relations, R&D Strategy Portfolio & Operations and R&D Portfolio and Project Management to provide integrated internal and external communi­cation and issue management strategies to communicate a growing, high-profile global R&D business, pipeline assets and emerging products to key internal and external stakeholders
  • Drives meaningful business and communications outcomes for R&D and J&J, and sets appropriate direction based on deep understanding of the business, competitive environment and key financial levers
  • Serves as R&D Global strategic liaison to R&D Asia Pacific regional communications lead; support AP regional communications leader and team to ensure alignment with global JRD strategic priorities, identify opportunities to “cross pollinate” and support regional initiatives and maintain open dialogue
  • Models and inspires integration of knowledge from internal and external networks; multi-stakeholder insights; and a broad understanding of the business, competitive and industry priorities to drive business and reputation outcomes, lead scientific positioning and issues management, and shape the environment for R&D’s medical solutions
  • Shapes team approach to identifying and applying key outcomes metrics to communication practices, and provide insights that drive confidence, integration and alignment
  • Maintains deep understanding of current issues in the global environment affecting the Janssen business and brands
  • Ensures ongoing collaboration, communication and close alignment with the Global Commercial Strategy Organization and Supply Chain and leadership priorities, communication and emergent issues.
  • Builds appropriate issue prevention, management and mitigation strategies in alignment with Public Affairs colleagues, local and regional teams, and appropriate external partners
  • Networks, builds and strengthens strategic relations on a global basis with crucial external stakeholders and influencers, including top-tier global, regional and trade media, key social media influencers, core third-party influencers and other relevant external constituents
  • Oversees R&D Global Strategic Communication budget and spending with the highest degree of fiscal prudence and responsibility; achieves annual goals & objectives within allocated budget. Manages external agencies
  • Helps the R&D Global Strategic Communication team provide timely regional alerts, ensure appropriate processes for regional sharing and support, regional contacts and results monitoring
  • Ensures proactive global monitoring, analysis, prevention and management of issues that may impact stakeholder trust and company reputation
  • Prepares, trains and coaches senior leaders and company spokespersons for sensitive media interviews, stakeholder meetings and other external engagements globally
  • Models and inspires a continuous improvement mindset to ensure self and the team stay on the leading edge of communications, change management, technology, social and other key trends
  • Serves on Global Portfolio Communications Leadership Team (LT) and additional LTs and Extended LTs with opportunities to develop and influence cross-Sector and J&J communication programs and interact with top senior leaders and peers

Qualifications

Required:

  • A Bachelor’s degree
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience leading and managing communication in a company, NGO, government agency or public relations agency.
  • Proven experience in pharma R&D, related science communication or public affairs.
  • Strong business acumen and demonstrated ability to build deep, authentic, successful relationships with top executives and scientists and strong influence with senior internal and external stakeholders.
  • A confident yet agile personality, the ability to move fast and the ability to provide strong counsel in real time.
  • Ability to drive workforce engagement strategies to inspire and increase productivity.
  • Ability to manage internal and external networks in a matrixed environment.
  • Proven track record of successful, independent public relations/communications, corporate communication, science communication, product communication, public affairs, and/or media relations achievements.
  • Global mindset and successful track record of working in a global function, with direct experience of leading on international projects, issues and teams, and of competent internal and external stakeholder interactions on an international basis.
  • Demonstrated thorough knowledge of R&D processes and the global landscape and key issues for biopharmaceutical science and innovation.
  • Broad understanding of competitive and industry priorities that drive business and social value.
  • Strong experience in crisis/issues management and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, global matrix environment.
  • Deep understanding of traditional media, digital and social platforms and strong experience dealing with national and local lay, professional/trade and social media.
  • Experience in managing budgets and resource allocation across large critical projects.
  • This position will be based in Spring House, PA and requires up to 25% domestic and international travel.

Preferred:

  • An advanced degree in Communications or Journalism.
  • Working knowledge of the financial disclosure process.
  • Current or past experience with direct people management skills.
  • Current or past work experience in R&D and Business Development.

Salary

The compensation and benefits information set forth in this posting applies to candidates hired in the United States. Candidates hired outside the United States will be eligible for compensation and benefits in accordance with their local market.

The base pay range for this position is $163,000 - $282,900 USD

Bonus

The Company maintains highly competitive, performance-based compensation programs. Under current guidelines, this position is eligible for an annual performance bonus in accordance with the terms of the applicable plan. The annual performance bonus is a cash bonus intended to provide an incentive to achieve annual targeted results by rewarding for individual and the corporation’s performance over a calendar/ performance year. Bonuses are awarded at the Company’s discretion on an individual basis.

  • Vacation – up to 160 hours per calendar year
  • Sick time - up to 40 hours per calendar year; for employees who reside in the State of Washington – up to 56 hours per calendar year
  • Holiday pay, including Floating Holidays – up to 13 days per calendar year
  • Work, Personal and Family Time - up to 40 hours per calendar year
