Job description

Duties

  • These positions serve as a temporary seasonal Range Aid/Range Technicians for the Color Country District and West Desert District.
  • Assists with range improvement projects
  • Makes vegetation counts from small plots of land.
  • Uses instruments needed in locating conservation projects.
  • Reports grazing violations or problems.
  • Detects trespass animals and assists in roundup of trespass livestock.
  • Under the direction of a higher level technician or specialist, works with cooperators to complete weed projects with user groups, recreationists, volunteers, etc.
  • Under the direction of a higher level technician or specialist, performs routine and recurring weed management activities in accordance with all applicable plans, agreements, and regulations.
  • Ensures grazing permit and lease stipulations are complied with.
  • Works with permittees/lessees on project maintenance and conditions.
  • May conduct range studies for condition and trend, utilization, actual use, climatology and other information used for allotment evaluations.
  • May identify range improvement needs.
  • May plan and conduct allotment inspections.
  • Assists with updating case files and automated documents.

Qualifications

To qualify at the GS-03 level you must meet the following:
Specialized Experience: Applicants must possess six (6) months of general experience. Examples of general experience may include working in any professional, technical, or other responsible field that provided you with a familiarity of range management programs or techniques of collecting data.
OR Education: To qualify based on education you must have one (1) year (30 semester hours) of study above high school that included at least 6 semester hours in a combination of courses such as range management, or conservation, agriculture, forestry, wildlife management engineering, biology, mathematics, or other natural or physical sciences.
OR Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate undergraduate education.
To qualify at the GS-04 level you must meet the following:
Specialized Experience: Applicants must possess six (6) months of general AND six (6) months of specialized work experience at or equivalent to the GS-03 level equivalent in difficulty and complexity to perform the duties of a Range Technician. Qualifying specialized experience includes: surveying public lands for the presence of noxious weeds; locating and treating weeds with designated herbicides; and preparing accurate records of all treatment.
OR Education: To qualify based on education you must have two (2) years (60 semester hours) of study above high school that included 12 semester hours in any combination of courses such as forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources, outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering or wildland fire science. No more than 3 semester hours in math is creditable.
OR Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate undergraduate education.
To qualify at the GS-05 level you must meet the following:
Specialized Experience: Applicants must possess one (1) year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-04 level equivalent in difficulty and complexity to perform the duties of a Range Technician. Qualifying specialized experience includes: assisting with conservation, regulation, and use of public or federally controlled lands for grazing; conduct range research activities; work in the operation of a livestock ranch or perform range/forest fire control, prevention or suppression work.
OR Education: To qualify based on education you must have four (4) years (120 semester hours) of education above high school, leading to a bachelor's degree with (a) with a major forestry, range management, agriculture or a subject-matter field directly related to the position or (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of the following courses: forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources, outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering or wildland fire science. No more than 6 semester hours in mathematics is creditable.
OR Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate undergraduate education.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
You must meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement.
Physical Demands: The work ranges from sedentary when completing duties in the office to frequent field work requiring a considerable amount of walking, riding, stooping, bending, and lifting.
Work Environment: Office work is performed in adequately lighted, heated, and air-conditioned offices. Much of the time is spent in the field where exposure to extremes of heat and cold, rough terrain, insects, snakes, and other hazards are common. Applicants may qualify for these positions based on experience, education, or an equivalent combination as described in the Qualifications section of this announcement.
Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required above GS-5 only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. One full year of graduate education meets the requirements for GS-7.
