CFD Research has an immediate need for a qualified Radiation Effects Engineer - Electronics to support flight and flight development projects as the focal engineer for Ionizing Radiation (IR) effects on electrical, electronic and Electromechanical (EEE) parts.

This tasking includes, but is not limited to, coordinating the development of project IR environments or developing of the project IR requirements, coordination or development of project IR Control Plans, working with designers to develop systems select EEE parts that are tolerant to the anticipated IR environments with guidance from a Senior level expert. Participation in all design reviews and verification work associated with the project.

Candidate will be required to perform the following:

  • Support projects during pre-Phase A and Phase A to help evaluate the radiation risk protocol for the project and recommend early processes in support of this protocol.
  • Support project development of the top-level requirements for the radiation environments. Work with the Chief Engineer's Office and Mission Safety to develop flow down requirements that are verifiable.
  • Coordinate with NASA Natural Environments Branch to develop the radiation environments specification based on the project's concept of operation documents.
  • Support the development of technical requirements, environment specifications and a radiation control plan, for flow down to all systems and subcontractors.
  • Support development of EEE parts lists reviews, testing, and analyses.
  • Support project verification by supplying all applicable system radiation analyses and any other required documentation to support the closing of all radiation requirements.
  • Supply support for smaller projects by performing limited testing and analyses to help minimize risk due to the radiation environments.
  • Review and comment on industry standard documents, DLA Land and Maritime documents, NESC documents, etc. that relate to Radiation Effects.
  • Support any Radiation Effects research tasks as required.
  • Support the education of NASA personnel, in the effects of radiation on electronic system design.
  • Support internal working groups, from an IR perspective, to ensure risks and requirements are addressed.

Here's What You'll Need:

  • Education: The following education and experience levels are required:
    • BS degree in Electrical or Aerospace Engineering or related field with a minimum of 15 years applicable experience or,
    • MS degree in Electrical or Aerospace Engineering or related field with a minimum of 13 years applicable experience or,
    • PhD degree in Electrical or Aerospace Engineering or related field with a minimum of 10 years applicable experience.

Skills: The following skills are required or desired, as indicated:

  • Experience with the effects of ionizing radiation on electronics and electronic components to include experience with NASA and/or Military Standards is required.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products such as PowerPoint, Excel, and Word are required.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills are required.
  • Experience with NASA Design Specifications, and Standards is highly desired.
  • Ability to interpret test results and prepare technical reports and presentations for internal use, project office use, government publications, and relevant scientific publications is desired.
  • Ability to review radiation requirements of various military specifications and provide comments is desired.
  • Ability to review radiation requirements for Standard Microcircuit Drawings is desired.
  • Ability to review and comment on radiation related JEDEC standards is desired.
  • Ability to review and comment on radiation related Test Standards is desired.
  • Ability to support research of radiation test facility capabilities is desired.
  • Familiarity with Military, Automotive and Industrial EEE part specifications is desired.
  • Ability to provide radiation assurance support to the NASA Electronic Parts and Packaging Program is desired.

Essential Functions

Work Environment:

  • General office environment (100%).
  • Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%).
  • Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%).
  • Requires travel in the domestic USA (<10%).

Physical Requirements:

  • Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (10%).
  • Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks (80%).
  • Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings.

Equipment and Machines:

  • Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).

Attendance:

  • Normal workday is from 7:30 a.m. through 4:30 p.m., Monday thru Friday.
  • Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job.
  • Regular attendance is a necessity and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required.

Other Essential Functions:

  • The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%).
  • Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.

Proof of U.S. Citizenship is required.


Location:This role is based in the Huntsville, AL area, and is 100% onsite.
