Overview: 

The Quality Assurance Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking qualified applicants for a Quality Fabrication Specialist.  This position will support the Fabrication, Instrumentation, & Inspection Division (FIID)with a focus on independent quality assurance support to ensure the safe operations. The Quality Fabrication Specialist works with internal and external customers and other technical professionals to ensure compliance with established engineering standards and conformance to fabrication requirements to support operations. Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

This position is the primarily involved in providing customer oversight on critical fabricated components for the Fabrication, Instrumentation, & Inspection Division (FIID). The position provides on-site oversight and inspections to ensure products are fabricated in accordance with established design requirements. Vendor on-site inspections are conducted as needed to verify compliance with procurement specifications, design specifications/drawings and fabrication procedures.

 

Major responsibilities include:

  • Provide quality assurance support and inspection of fabricated items and assemblies to ensure conformance with established performance criteria.
    • On-site vendor inspections
    • Compliance to identified inspection techniques
    • Witness inspection and testing of critical parts and assemblies, while identifying quality in-process hold points..
  • Assemble and review fabrication documentation.
  • Participate in evaluations to determine the technical capabilities of vendors.
  • Review procurement specifications, design specifications, fabrication procedures, work packages, and other documents for incorporation of appropriate fabrication controls.
  • Perform receipt inspections and commercial grade item dedication.
  • Initiate nonconformance reports for fabricated components that do not satisfy specified requirements.
  • Assist in initiating deviation requests for components that can not be fabricated to specified requirements.
  • Assist in the development of fabrication and inspection plans and establishment of hold points.
  • Provide planning assistance on various tasks, projects, procurements, work evolutions.
  • Identify and/or solve problems, while assessing needs to achieve desired results.
  • Continually search for new technologies and processes to improve quality and performance management functions.
  • Operate and communicate effectively and efficiently with all levels of management on fabrication issues.
  • Establish relationships and work effectively with both external and internal customers to meet goals.
  • Build and develop strong relationships with peers and others to exchange feedback on issues or concerns.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor's Degree in science, engineering, or a related field with at least eight years of experience in manufacturing/fabrication methods, machining methods/techniques, and/or dimensional inspection experience, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
  • A strong understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) principles from ANSI Y14.5.
  • Experience with setup and operation of a CMM [coordinate measurement machine] and able to interpret CMM data.
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings and design specifications.
  • Demonstrated experience in dimensional inspection including geometric tolerancing.
  • Must be willing to travel as needed to support fabrication projects.
  • Must be able to qualify as Radiological Worker and Beryllium Worker.
  • Exceptional teamwork with attention to detail and precision, are required attributes.
  • The position requires strong computer, organizational, verbal, and written communication skills, with the ability to track multiple projects.
  • Strong analytical skills, project management, customer service experience, and the ability to interpret, communicate, and implement complex instructions are necessary.
  • The incumbent must maintain certifications and qualifications as required.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Have a good working knowledge of relevant codes and standards, such as ASTM, ASME AWS, ISO 9001, ISO 17025, etc.
  • Experience with/knowledge of different trades such as machining, welding, technical pipefitting, and heat treatment is highly desirable.
  • Experience in providing oversight and inspection of fabricated items and assemblies at supplier sites.
  • Knowledge of nuclear and radiological requirements.

 

Special Requirements:

  • Export control, no clearance: This position requires access to technology that is subject to export control requirements. Successful candidates must be qualified for such access without an export control license.
  • Q clearance: This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
  • Visa Sponsorship: Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
