Reports To: Quality Manager, Carolina Foods, LLC

In absence of the Quality Manager, the Quality Compliance Manager would oversee the department.


Carolina Foods is seeking a highly motivated and energetic individual with a strong passion for food to join our Charlotte Manufacturing team. The QA Compliance Specialist as a member of the Operations Team, will oversee quality and food safety activities. The successful applicant for this opportunity has knowledge of BRC and/or other GFSI schemes, knowledge of HACCP/HARPC, is a strong communicator, highly organized, and capable of working independently or in a team environment.


Key Responsibilities:

Coordinate Quality and Food Safety Management Programs.

Assist the QA Manager with leading cross functional Food Safety Teams and Conduct verification and validation activities.

Support the QA Manager on Hold Release and Recall Programs

Major Function

  • SQF Expert, HACCP coordinator
  • This position has overall responsibility in monitoring the plant's food safety - HACCP, FDA and Quality programs.
  • Support the QA Manager with training and developing laboratory techs and staff. This position must initiate and sometimes develop programs that strive for continuous improvement under the QA Managers guidance.

Duties and Responsibilities

Pre-production Quality Evaluation

  • Identify major quality characteristics prior to the start of production of any new or modified product
  • Suggest controls and checkpoints necessary to assure that these characteristics will be met to QA Manager
  • Set up processing specifications with limits for acceptability
  • Design necessary QA paperwork needed with new products or customer requests

Incoming Raw Material Control

  • Monitor a system that ensures conformance to approved specifications for raw materials blends and finished goods.
  • Assure accurate testing methods and statistical support data for pricing claims, supplier histories and rejection of raw materials.
  • Ensure Allergen Control in all areas of processing
  • Handle all non-conforming product

Sanitation

  • Develop and monitor sanitation standards using microbiological data to provide recommendations on cleaning frequencies and methods.
  • Review pre-flight inspections and report deficiencies as required for HACCP or Quality policies.
  • Monitor Plant facility for sanitation GMP's, glass, housekeeping and pest control on a continuous basis
  • Maintain a micro testing program, investigate and implement corrections as needed.

Process Control

  • Develop a system to monitor the production process, which assures that the product meets the establishment specifications.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of a process audit system which tracks and reports deviations using statistical methods.
  • Identify and implement process improvements that will improve quality and productivity.

Training Program

  • Implement the training program for orientation of new employees and as a continuing education program in the areas of sanitation, hygiene practices and product handling.
  • Evaluate and implement training needed to develop your direct reports
  • Evaluate the training needs of the QA staff.
  • Assist other areas of the company in quality and GMP training.

Customer Service

  • When necessary, pursue and resolve customer complaints with personal or telephone contacts followed-up with letters.

Management Duties

  • Must represent department at various meetings (Safety and QA meetings etc)
  • Direct the Quality Assurance staff and handle personnel problems as needed
  • Provide job descriptions and duty assignments for all department personnel
  • Quality Assurance personnel training and development (management, food safety, and safety, etc.

Post Production Monitoring

  • Monitor returned goods inspection and reworked items
  • Communicate to management non-conformance and product HOLDS when finished goods do not meet established specifications

Special Studies

  • Conduct and/or recommend processing studies to improve overall quality, shelf-life, etc. of our products

Research and Development

  • Provide input including product ideas, new ingredient developments, and processing suggestions

Additional Responsibilities

  • Work closely with production, and warehousing to achieve company goals for quality, productivity and yield
  • Keep abreast of company developments that affect product specifications, quality, yields, etc.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of QA department activities
  • Assure complete compliance with all customer instructions.

Job Requirements

  • Must be a leader with management level experience
  • Must be analytical, systematic and a problem solver
  • Must be able to work with discretion
  • Must be able to make decisions based on facts, regulations, and policies that may not be popular with a group's consensus.
  • Must be self-motivated and able to perform work with minimal supervision.

Education and Experience

  • Master's degree in sciences, chemistry, microbiology or a related field with a minimum (48) months experience in food quality assurance, preferably bakery experience or a BS in one of these sciences and a minimum of 8 years' experience in food quality assurance
  • A minimum of 3 years Management experience required
