Minimum Qualifications
Education and/or Equivalent Experience:
  • Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in a field related to Chemical, Environmental, or Biological Sciences with 24 hours of Chemistry only OR 16 hours of Chemistry plus 16 hours of biology/microbiology combination with a minimum of one hour of each. Minimum qualifications include four (4) years of experience in a field related to drinking water or environmental water quality analyses with experience in the use of computerized analytical instrumentation.
  • A master’s or doctoral degree in one of the above disciplines may be substituted for one (1) year of experience.

Licenses or Certifications:
  • Valid Texas Class “C” Driver’s License.
Notes to Applicants
This position assists in the management of the Quality Assurance and safety program for the Laboratory Services Division, including conducting audits, monitoring lab compliance with water and wastewater regulations, conducting training classes and presentations, writing technical procedures, and assisting with management of the laboratory’s LIMS database.
Retention Incentive Bonus:
This position may be eligible for an Incentive Bonus of up to $3,000!
  • $500 after 90 days.
  • $500 after 180 days.
  • $1,000 after 1 year.
  • $1,000 after 2 years.

Driving Requirement:
  • This position requires a Valid Texas Class “C” Driver’s License or the ability to acquire one by your hire date. External New Hires must meet the City of Austin’s Driver Record Evaluation ( DRE ) requisite. To be considered for a driving position, applicants cannot have more than three moving violations or a total of six Driver Record Evaluation points within a period of thirty-six (36) months.

Pay Range
$30.29 - $37.86 per hour
Hours
Monday - Friday 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM, plus mandatory overtime and holiday work as needed. Position is considered essential and may be required to report to work after hours or during periods of bad weather.

Duties, Functions and Responsibilities
Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
Review Quality Assurance/Quality Control programs Assist in administering Quality Assurance/Quality Control Programs Research, develop, implement, and maintain QA/QC and standard operating procedures Review and approve work of other analysts. Provide technical expertise on an ongoing basis. Assist in developing and managing quality control initiatives Conduct audits Review and interpret policies, codes and regulations Assist in developing and maintaining program policy documentation Develop and conduct technical training for Division staff and other laboratory customers. Provide guidance and recommendations in budget development. Review and recommend specifications for technical instrumentation and contracts. Assist in evaluating bid proposals and managing contracts. Assume QA officer responsibilities in their absence.

  • May provide leadership, guidance and/or technical support to others.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
  • Performs internal audits; perform quality assessments of data produced without outside influence and document corrective actions
  • Must have working knowledge of Bacteriological, Inorganic and Organic Chemistry methods for which data is performed
  • Have working knowledge of the NELAC standard
  • Have working knowledge of water and wastewater analytical methods
  • Must be able to work independently and have analytical problems skills
  • Must be able to produce SOP documents
  • Must be able to review data and QC parameters accurately
  • Must be able to keep track of training documentation
  • Must be able to compile and submit reports.
  • Must possess ability to interact well with diverse work force
