Public Works Maintainer I

Shorewood, Illinois (pop. 18,186) is accepting applications for a Maintainer I in our Public Works Department. Shorewood is a growing community in northwestern Will County and adjacent to Joliet. This position is responsible for the maintenance, operation, repair, and construction of the Village’s infrastructure. The maintainer will perform various activities involving, but not limited to, roadway maintenance repairs, curbs and sidewalks, sanitary and storm sewers, watermains, buildings, vehicles, and Village utility locates. The salary range is $50,009.39 - $65,808.94 (FY2024-2025).

This position is subject to a collective bargaining agreement with Local 150 of the International Union of Operating Engineers. Local 150 Union Health and Retirement Insurance is provided. JOB DESCRIPTION: PUBLIC WORKS MAINTAINER I

DEPARTMENT: PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT

REPORTS TO: PUBLIC WORKS FOREMAN

Under the supervision of the Public Works Foreman, the Maintainer will be responsible for the maintenance, operation, repair, and construction of the Village’s infrastructure. The maintainer will perform various activities involving, but not limited to, roadway maintenance repairs, curbs and sidewalks, sanitary and storm sewers, watermains, buildings, vehicles, and Village utility locates.

DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

· Maintains and repairs various Village infrastructure, including roadways, curbs, sidewalks, water mains, sanitary and storm sewers, facilities, and other Village infrastructure.

· Miscellaneous landscaping including, but not limited to, mow grass, tree trimming, dirt work, and typical property maintenance.

· Operates a variety of light and heavy equipment such as backhoes, utility vehicles, vacuum truck, mowers, and snow removal equipment.

· Performs preventative maintenance on all vehicles, tractors and power tools.

· Ability to communicate effectively in both written and verbal forms with the public, other utilities, and contractors.

· Performs the duties of utility locates under the guidance of the Village’s Utility Locator. These duties include locating, marking and identifying water lines, sanitary and storm sewer lines, electric lines, and verifying our contractor has been contacted for traffic signal lines.

· Participates, in a rotation with other staff, with the Village’s Locating responsibilities under the guidance of the Village’s Locator.

· Participates with the Village’s Snow Removal Operations.

· Responds to emergency call-outs for Public Works related responses. Must be available 24-hours per day / 7-days per week basis.

· Performs other related tasks as assigned.

This position requires good decision making skills. Marking a utility line improperly or failing to do so could be very dangerous for excavating in the area. It could be very costly if lines are damaged or not recognized during the design process.

QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS REQUIRED

· High School diploma or GED

· Valid Illinois Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class B or ability to obtain within three (3) months of hire.

· Certificate of Locating Competency or ability to obtain within three (3) months of hire.
