General Description
The City of Madison is hiring Public Works Laborers. This is routine entry-level, manual work in the performance of varied public works maintenance activities within the Streets and Parks Divisions. Work includes laboring tasks, equipment operation, the use of hand and power tools for grounds and building maintenance work, the routine maintenance of tools and equipment, and related cleaning and maintenance of Public Works facilities. Work is performed independently or as part of a team and is directed and reviewed by a leadworker or designated supervisor for conformance with established procedures and/or objectives.
Hours of work: 40 hours per week. Work will generally be performed eight (8) hours per day between the hours of 4:00 am and 6:00 pm. Start and end times will vary by season.

Examples of Duties and Responsibilities
Grounds and Facilities Maintenance
- Mow, trim, and remove debris from the public right-of-way, including medians, parks, greenways, and boulevards, using various mowers and string trimmers.
- Establish and maintain ice skating rinks, including installing and removing hockey boards and daily clearing and flooding.
- Remove snow and ice from alleyways, carriage lanes, bike and walking paths, sidewalks, parking lots, bus stops, etc.
- Remove trash from medians, parks, boulevards, and assigned routes, including picking trash and emptying barrels.
- Prune and assist with removal of trees and shrubs using chainsaws and various hand tools.
- Leaf and Yardwaste collection and clean-up and mulching in the fall and spring.
- Curbside brush collection operations.
- Serve as public drop-off site Attendant.
- Under direction, perform regular maintenance of trees, shrubs, and perennial and annual flower beds, including planting, weeding, watering, mulching, deadheading, and pruning.
- Perform preventative maintenance of mowers, including blade sharpening, greasing, power washing, oil changes, etc.
- Maintain clean and safe work area in the field, as well as shop, work, and common areas of maintenance facilities.
- Clean equipment and vehicles as needed.
- Transport equipment and vehicles for use, maintenance, storage, etc.
- Report damages and/or repairs to supervisor or mechanic, as appropriate.
- While performing assigned work, report any maintenance or safety related issues to leadworker or supervisor in a timely manner.
- When assigned, perform maintenance tasks in any of the following areas: Public right-of-way, including streets, alleys, carriage lanes, and medians, as well as Public Works maintenance yards and drop-off facilities, and Parks properties including golf courses, mall/concourse, cemetery, conservation parks, general parks, and botanical gardens.
- Maintain picnic tables, benches, and hockey boards.
- Drive tractor and hay wagon for fall hayrides and special events.
- Set-up and preparation for special events within parks.
- Perform other related work as required.
Minimum Qualifications
- Three (3) months experience and eligibility for rehire as a City of Madison seasonal laborer
- Six (6) months of equivalent public works, landscaping, or construction experience including varied manual tasks.
