Apply Now Job Description The Department of Public Works for the Town of Amherst is seeking an Electrician to perform skilled level electrical work in the installation, alteration, maintenance, and repair of electrical systems, equipment, and fixtures in accordance with standard practices of the electrical trade.

Must possess a Massachusetts Journeyman Electrician License. POSITION DESCRIPTION PW7 Electrical Division Electrician Essential Personnel Job Summary: Perform skilled level electrical work in the installation, alteration, maintenance, and repair of electrical systems, equipment, and fixtures in accordance with standard practices of the electrical trade. Supervision Received: Serves under the general supervision of Lead Electrician who outlines policies, procedures and reviews work for effectiveness of attaining goals.

Uses judgment in planning work schedules and accomplishing assignments, appraising supervisor of serious problems. Supervision Exercised: Generally, none but may provide direction to employees assisting in tasks. Major Duties: 1.

Installs, alters, maintains, and repairs electrical wiring systems and equipment, both high and low voltage, AC / DC, including Data and Communications. Installs and maintains motors of several hundred horsepower, coils, transformers, generators, and control equipment. Installs and maintains pumps consisting of various horsepower, from functional to several hundred horsepower.

Installs and maintains transformers, substations, and related control equipment (motors, generators, pumps). 2. Complies with laws and regulations including all safety policies and procedures.

Inspects and maintains equipment and tools for proper operating condition. Maintains current skills and knowledge in the proper and safe techniques of electrical work. 3.

Documents information on preventive maintenance file for electrical equipment and machinery and performs and monitors a preventive maintenance program. 4. Designs functional electric circuitry for electrical systems; drafts electrical requests for quote / proposals and obtains quotes from suppliers.

5. Responds to citizen and customer inquiries or complaints; demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless service. 6.

Acts as a "standby" electrician for responding to emergency calls after normal working hours. Performs alarm repairs, installation, activation and ongoing testing and preventative maintenance. 7.

Works on Traffic Signals and town owned street lights. 8. May be assigned to work in other DPW Divisions as required.

Minimum Qualifications: Completion of a recognized four-year electrical apprenticeship program, or equivalent training, three years of experience as a journeyman electrician. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted. Extensive knowledge of electrical construction and maintenance, including installation of all sizes of electrical conduit, cables, wires, switches, automatic starting equipment, programmable logic controllers and pole line construction.

Significant knowledge of both National and State Electric Codes with emphasis on codes relevant to municipal operations. Skill in the care and use of hand tools and equipment necessary to perform various electrical repair tasks such as hickeys, volt meters, wiggins, meggars, and VOM's. Skill in the operation of aerial equipment, and pneumatic equipment; skill in locating and adjusting defects in electrical systems and equipment.

Ability to distinguish between the full range of colors in the color spectrum to work with electrical wires and/or traffic signal lights; ability to use graphic instructions such as blueprints, schematic drawings, layouts, or other visual aids; ability to estimate labor or material costs/amounts from blueprints or work plans; ability to exercise independent thought and action within the scope of specific assignments. Must be able to comprehend and make inferences from written materials; measure distances with a tape measure or other measuring device. The ability to express ideas on technical problems clearly and concisely orally and in writing in the English language; ability to communicate orally and cooperatively with peers, building occupants, or the public in face-to-face one-on-one settings, or using a telephone.

Must be able to observe, monitor, or compare data to determine compliance with prescribed operating or safety standards and to work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others. Special Requirements: Valid Commonwealth of Massachusetts Class D license to operate motor vehicles. Must possess a Massachusetts Journeyman Electrician License.

Tools and Equipment Used: Motorized vehicles for driving, power and hand tools and equipment used in the electrical trades; personal computer, including word processing software; calculator; copy and fax machine; phone; mobile or portable radio. Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee makes precise arm-hand positioning movements (i.e., operates an electric hand drill); lift arms above shoulder level to work in ceiling areas on light fixtures; climb ladders or steps to reach work areas. Must be able to work at heights greater than 30 feet; remain in a standing position for extended periods of time; work in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the outdoor elements; and travel across rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces. Is regularly required to reach with hands and arms.

The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; and use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear. The employee must frequently lift and/or move heavy objects (50 pounds or more) long distances (more than 20 feet).

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and the ability to adjust focus; distinguish between the full range of colors in the color spectrum to work with electrical wires and/or traffic signal lights. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may work in small, cramped areas such as ceiling crawl spaces, equipment enclosures, closets, etc.; occasionally works near moving mechanical parts. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, and toxic chemicals. The employee is occasionally exposed to risk of electrical shock.

The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.
