Public Services Music Library Supervisor
University Libraries, George F. DeVine Music Library

POSITION SUMMARY
The George F. DeVine Music Library Supervisor (Daytime Position) is directly responsible for managing the daily operations and functions of the Music Library public and technical services including circulation/public desk operations, processing reserve collections, monitoring and managing outgoing interlibrary lending transactions, assisting our users in formulating their interlibrary borrowing requests, and hiring, training, and supervising student workers who provide front-line Public Services at the circulation desk and who assist with Music Library outreach efforts. The Music Library Supervisor (Daytime Position) collaborates with the Music Library Supervisor (Evening Position) on all aspects of student library assistant work and supervision. This position provides reference and research assistance services primarily involving, but not limited to music for university students, faculty, and members of the public. This position also provides library users collection development support while coordinating collection development activities. This includes pre-order catalog and vendor searching. Additionally, the daytime supervisor monitors and maintains the collection, facilities, and equipment. This position has broad responsibilities and operates with a high degree of autonomy. This position requires a high level of decision-making related to the implementation and interpretation of library policies and procedures, including many necessary to ensure security and student safety. This individual must communicate effectively with UT faculty, staff, students, and the public, as well as with UT Libraries and campus partners. This position requires specialized knowledge of music materials which include various formats of scores, recordings, and online materials in addition to online and physical books and journals.
Qualifications
RESPONSIBILITIESPublic and Technical Services: Circulation and Collection Development/Management
    Opens the Music Library and manages service delivery 1st shift, Monday – Friday.Independently responsible for all Music Library circulation activities (based on Alma integrated library system) and control of materials being circulated; mediates problems with library patrons regarding fines and books charged in the computer system; serves
    as first point of appeal for fines and other charges (damaged books, etc.). Assists in determining library policies and procedures and interpreting them for patrons; acts as with Hodges Public Services and other branch libraries.Manages interlibrary lending operation for the branch; determine suitability of items for lending to other libraries.Gathers statistics on turnstile count and users in the Music Library. Assists with Music Library Annual Report.Oversees stacks maintenance, inventories, shelf-reading, cleaning, shifting, etc.Supervises branch reserve operations: processes library- and faculty-owned materials for reserve, creates reserve records for the online catalog, supervises reserve circulation, maintains reserve collection, acts as a liaison with faculty on use of reserve services, provides support in creating reserve playlists in online streaming audio databases.Acts as a liaison for university faculty and students to generate collection development requests for the Music Library.Provides in-depth catalog assistance to help users including faculty, staff, graduate students, undergraduate students and members of the general public identify appropriate library resources and locate materials, both print and electronicOffers reference assistance to students, faculty, and staff, in person, by telephone, via chat, and via e-mail through pinpointing specialized music information and resources.Provides instruction, teaching users how to locate and use print and electronic resources
Supervisor of Student Library Assistants (SLAs)
    Trains and supervises front-line public service student assistants: Hires, trains, supervises, and evaluates student assistants. Supervision performed in consultation with Evening Supervisor in regards to public service and job performance matters, including handling problems referred by Evening Supervisor.SLA Administration: Manages annual budget for SLAs, creates training materials, maintains procedures manuals for circulation, reserve, and Public Services including the circulation desk.Coordinates student work schedules with the Evening Supervisor.Supervises SLAs performing pre-order bibliographic verification of music scores and recordings in online catalog, acquisition system order records, OCLC and other databases or vendors.Ensures accurate time reporting/keeping and payroll for student assistantsWith Music Librarians and Music Library Supervisor 1 (Evening Position), evaluates and assesses student assistant needs and develops plans for student assistant utilization.
Serves on University and Library committees
    Participates in Libraries’ Public Services Group, recommending changes as needed to policies procedures, and workflows to meet evolving service needs.Represents the Music Library on University Libraries operational and assessment working groups and committees.Other duties as assigned.
Equipment / Facilities / Outreach
    Obtains service and supplies; assists users with photocopier, printer, lab computers, and AV equipment. Communicates with appropriate campus partners, the Coordinator of the Music Library, and building maintenance staff regarding facility, service, and security issues.Manages supply requests and monitors expenditures.Creates or supervises the creation of displays/exhibits of Music Library materials in theMusic Library and in conjunction with Music Library outreach activities. Assists with staffing when needed at outreach activities.In conjunction with Music Librarians and in accord with the policies of the UTK LibrariesMarketing and Communications Department, composes and posts news items and announcements promoting new resources and services via the library's website and other outlets.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required
    High school diploma or GEDLibrary experience or 2 years of work with the publicPublic or customer services experience
Preferred
    Bachelor’s degreeAcademic library experienceSupervisory experienceCourses or experience in music and the demonstrated ability to read music

    Ability to read musical notationAbility to perform or compose musicPublic or technical skills in an academic library settingExperience with graphic designAbility to utilize a library service platform to complete tasks associated with the fulfillment of patron requests, circulation of materials, and management of patron accounts
