Job Profile Summary
This role focuses on preventing workplace accidents and promotes health and safety awareness and education to individuals within the organization. In addition, this role focuses on performing the following Associate Safety related duties: Prevents workplace accidents and promotes health and safety awareness and education for employees. A professional individual contributor role that may direct the work of other lower level professionals or manage processes and programs. The majority of time is spent overseeing the design, implementation or delivery of processes, programs and policies using specialized knowledge and skills typically acquired through advanced education. An experienced level role that applies practical knowledge of job area typically obtained through advanced education and work experience. Works independently with general supervision, problems faced are difficult but typically not complex, and may influence others within the job area through explanation of facts, policies and practices.
Job Overview
Under general supervision of the shift supervisor, this position performs all duties and responsibilities related to the day-to-day protection and security of hospital assets and information as well as the safety of all persons on hospital property. Public Safety officers conduct proactive patrols of all hospital buildings and grounds: preventing fire, theft, vandalism, illegal entry, and bodily harm to patients, visitors, and staff. Public Safety officers serve as immediate and first responders to crisis situations on a daily basis, and document all safety and security incidents in accordance with department policies and procedures. This position may be assigned as a training officer, instructor for newly hired Public Safety employees, and/or department wide training initiatives. This position may be responsible for coordinating non-emergency and emergency communications for the Communication Center, monitoring of all security systems, and other assignments as set forth by department leadership.
Job Description
Minimum Qualifications:
1. High School diploma or equivalent.
2. Graduate of an approved law enforcement training program or Police Academy.
3. Valid state issued driver's license with at least 1 year of driving experience.
4. One (1) year of experience as a Public Safety Officer.
Preferred Qualifications:
1. Associates degree in Criminal Justice or related area.
2. Three (3) years of related experience in military, security, or police.
3. Security or first responder certifications such as CPR/AED, CPI NCI, AVADE, MOAB, MDTS, Stop the Bleed, or Nasal Naloxone Certifications.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities listed below are intended to describe the general nature of work and are not intended to be an all-inclusive list. Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned.
1. Provides excellent customer service by assisting and interacting with patients, visitors, and other Medical Center staff in a manner that conveys the highest level of dignity, respect, courtesy, and professionalism.
2. Performs basic Public Safety and security duties such as conducting internal and external patrols of all facilities and grounds, responding to and reporting on both routine and emergency calls for service, building alarms, restraining violent patients and/or visitors; monitors assigned area for suspicious activity, and screens vendors and visitors entering the facility.
3. Provides escorts to patients, visitors, staff and others in conformance with established procedures.
4. Identifies security vulnerabilities, safety hazards and violations of Hospital policy. Takes immediate correction action to mitigate the vulnerability or hazard, if possible. Collaborates with other departments to either mitigate or resolve, if warranted. Reports deficiencies to Supervisor/Lead Officer, and documents via an incident report or work order for required follow up and resolution.
5. Demonstrates proper actions during patient crisis interventions, designed to achieve the safest possible outcomes for patients, employees, security officers and others using the least invasive measures possible.
6. Assures that all employees and other appropriate members of the Hospital community are in possession of a Hospital identification badge and that it is clearly visible. Consistently challenges all individuals without visible identification in an appropriate and courteous manner.
7. Grants access to locked areas and buildings to authorized staff in possession of a Hospital identification badge. Restricts access to those individuals who have no authorized business on campus in accordance with established policies and procedures.
8. Maintains composure under stressful circumstances. Competent in all trained intervention skills including verbal and nonverbal de-escalation strategies and approaches.
9. Actively participates and coordinates investigations, conducts interviews, reviews recorded video, prepares case files, catalogs and secures evidence as required.
10. Assists with all emergencies and disasters that may affect the Medical Center, including: crowd control; evacuations and other responsibilities as directed by supervisors.
11. Identifies problems, issues, concerns, or conflicts requiring resolution; and completely and impartially reviews each situation to obtain the necessary facts to formulate a resolution. Attempts to resolve situations within their immediate control, and communicates these situations or those outside of their control/capacity, to supervision and actively participates in the response.
12. Completes an accurate and comprehensive written incident report for any incident occurring upon hospital property; ensures compliance with established procedures.
13. Enlists the support of a supervisor or assistance from fellow Public Safety Officers when warranted.
14. May determines the priority of calls for service and requests for assistance based upon the nature, circumstances and severity of the issue reported; including making the decision to implement emergency response procedures (e.g.: Code White, Code Red, Code Purple, etc).
15. Follows department Lost and Found procedures, checks the L&F telephone hotline, logs all required L&F information, investigates all L&F claims, communicates effectively with complainants, closes out communications when items are returned, and stores found items appropriately.
16. May manage the workflow of their shift by assigning staff to calls and monitoring patrol coverage of campus; keeping the shift supervisor apprised and informed of irregularities or issues needing to be addressed.
17. May perform basic dispatch duties such as: Receiving emergency and non-emergency telephone calls; monitoring Intellex Digital Recording system and other computerized alarm and access control systems; providing radio communication management; and providing communications interface with other agencies.
18. May assign field staff to respond to calls for service and/or observations gathered from the monitoring of security systems, and ensures an adequate number of personnel are assigned to calls for service.
19. May coordinate and distribute master keys to appropriate hospital employees
20. Demonstrates proper actions during patient crisis interventions, in accordance with CPI NCI, MOAB, MDTS and Copkido training.
21. Functions as a highly effective Team Leader during patient crisis interventions. Coaches and counsels shift security officers on intervention performance, and develops intervention strategies designed at achieving the safest possible outcomes to crisis.
22. Assists in the development of security staff training and education. Coordinates new material training and in-service training for all security personnel on shift. Effectively trains and educates new hire security officers on all security duties.
23. May lead employee CODE Educational Tests. Is competent in all areas of Code staff education. Competent on the campus fire alarm panel reset and all knowledgeable of all other fire alarm system equipment, including extinguishers and hoses.
24. Maintains knowledge of all applicable off-site properties and campuses, and has adequately trained all shift mates on roles of response, inspections and knowledge of off-sites.
25. Is knowledgeable of and can operate all security systems including surveillance, electronic controlled access, intrusion and panic alarms, Kinderguard infant security, etc. as applicable. Assures all security officers on shift are trained operators of these systems.
26. Maintains collaborative, team relationships with peers and colleagues in order to effectively contribute to the working group's achievement of goals, as well as to help foster a positive work environment.
Physical Requirements:
1. Frequent standing and walking with the ability to stand and/or walk for eight (8) hours.
2. Climb multiple flights of stairs.
3. Lift fifty (50) pounds alone.
4. Must be able to wear appropriate personal protective equipment such as masks, gloves or eye protection as required.
5. Some exposure to the elements during regular rounds.
6. Ability to work long, irregular, and odd hours required. Position may also require unanticipated overtime and hold overs to maintain minimum staffing levels from time to time.
7. Possibility of injury due to eviction of unauthorized persons, restraint of violent patients, etc.
8. Exposure to various areas containing hazardous material and radioactive substances when performing patrols.
9. Frequent contact with patients, visitors, and employees.
10. Ability to work in confined or open environments.
11. Ability to work independently or in a team environment.
Skills & Abilities:
1. Completes all training requirements and courses established and/or provided by the department.
2. Proficient in communicating, reading, and writing in English.
3. Basic Computer Skills required.
4. Ability to multi-task and meet established deadlines.
5. Ability to assess potentially dangerous situations quickly, make sound decisions, and take appropriate action based on the information available.
6. Physically able to perform the duties and responsibilities outlined above.
7. Demonstrate emotional maturity, dependability, punctuality, diplomacy, tact, poise, self- confidence, and positivity (devoid of negative remarks).
8. Must be trustworthy, helpful, friendly, courteous, and disciplined.
9. Ability to become licensed as a Special State Police Officer.
