POSITION SUMMARY

Public Health Specialist (U) will support the County and community-based PUBLIC HEALTH initiatives aimed at improving safety, health, and well-being of Bernalillo County residents. Coordinate, evaluate, and educate the public on the effectiveness of department programs in PUBLIC HEALTH.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Develop, manage, and implement evidence-based intervention programs on identified PUBLIC HEALTH priorities and needs.
  2. Compile and analyze data to identify disease trends and PUBLIC HEALTH issues at the community level through research methods that are inclusive of peer reviewed literature, community knowledge and health outcome data.
  3. Participate in community disease investigations and evaluate the effectiveness of the department's PUBLIC HEALTH programs.
  4. Develop and implement educational outreach plans and education related health curriculums and materials; maintain database and mailing lists to facilitate education and outreach to specified audiences.
  5. Develop, implement and analyze surveys, focus group materials and other research tools to inform health program development/modification for Bernalillo County and community school related groups.
  6. Research grant programs for applicability to County needs and priorities, assist department in grant/report writing and applications and assure compliance with federal, state and/or other applicable guidelines.
  7. Conduct community health assessments using appropriate tools and methods.
  8. Facilitate, coordinate and participate in community groups, neighborhood association meetings and focus groups targeting community health issues.
  9. Assist with oversight of program/projects, budgets, and maintenance of programs and program files.
  10. Distribute information on PUBLIC HEALTH and health prevention educational programs.
  11. Performs other job related duties as required or assigned.

  1. Bachelor's Degree in Public Health, Education, Communications, Environmental Health Sciences, Social Sciences, or related field, and two (2) years of work experience in PUBLIC HEALTH, health education, communications, environmental health, or working with communities. Any equivalent combination of related education and/or experience may be considered for the above requirements.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

The offer of this Bernalillo County position requires compliance with the following:

  1. Employee must successfully complete the post-offer employment medical examination and background investigation.
  2. Employee must comply with the safety guidelines of the County.
  3. Employee must complete required FEMA training(s) as assigned to position.
  4. Employee must have a valid New Mexico driver's license by employment date and maintain a valid NM driver's license while employed in this position.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  1. Some duties are performed outdoors which entails exposure to extremes of weather conditions.
  2. Indoor duties are performed in a temperature-controlled environment on an even carpeted or tiled surface.
  3. Outdoor duties may be performed on both even and uneven surfaces which may be either wet or dry. Surfaces may be inclined or flat, and range from natural undisturbed soil to gravel, asphalt, or concrete.
  4. May perform duties alone or as part of a group.
  5. Work hazard or potential work hazards include chemicals and severe weather conditions; driving of vehicles; working in and around heavy equipment; and performing duties on rough terrain.
  6. Employee will be on a flexible work schedule, including evenings and weekends as training schedules demand.
  7. Employee works with a select team without direct supervision, and at times may work with a large group of people.

EQUIPMENT, TOOLS AND MATERIALS

  1. Telephone, two-way radio, calculator/adding machine, testing and measuring devices, photocopier, fax machine, paper forms, and writing instruments are used in performance of duties.
  2. County vehicle is used by employee in traveling from site-to-site throughout the County.
