Job description

The DuPage County Health Department is looking for a Public Health Nurse to join our team at our Central Public Health Center, located in Wheaton. This team member will provide comprehensive Public Health nursing services to a diverse multicultural population in a variety of settings. In this position you will be responsible for providing professional nursing treatment and care to clients. The office hours are from 8:00am-4:30pm; clinical hours may vary based on program needs. Flexibility in schedule will be addressed with supervisor.

  • Provides direct Public Health nursing services to assigned caseload; administers health care and nursing services in homes, clinics, schools, daycare facilities, and community settings.
  • Assists with the training of staff; provides appropriate leadership and direction and promotes positive morale, creativity and teamwork among staff; delegates work assignments to co-workers as assigned.
  • Educates clients, both individually and in small groups, on a variety of health related topics; organizes and participates in clinics as assigned.
  • Completes assessments and reassessments of needed health care and social services; develops individual care plans; provides appropriate referral information to clients.
  • Counsels' individuals and families with their health needs and concerns related to Sexually Transmitted Infections, HIV, and TB; monitors adherence to prescribed medication regimen, following Public Health statutes to ensure public safety.
  • Completes paperwork, medical forms and health histories in a timely manner including medical clearance of TB; administers and records oral and intermuscular medications.
  • Provides nursing consultations; administers immunizations and screening tests; presents classroom or other community based presentations.
  • Demonstrates independent judgment and discretion in making position related decisions including but not limited to assessing medication (TB) effectiveness and/or toxicity.
  • Consults with offsite physicians; participates in emergency response activities as assigned; maintains required training, licensure, and/or certification.
  • Maintains confidentiality of privileged information and adheres to patient privacy laws.
  • Demonstrates sensitivity and understanding of other ethnic groups and cultures.
  • Available to respond to clients and/or customers, either in person or over the phone, during assigned business hours and/or clinic times.
  • May serve as clinic or conference charge nurse.
  • Consistently and on-going conduct follow-up investigations on reported cases of communicable disease.
  • May provide observational experience for college nursing students, assuming overall responsibility for the shared case.
  • Collaborates with and educates other healthcare professionals to ensure proper treatment and coordination of client care.
  • Links clients to needed personal health services to assure the provision of health care needs.
  • Uses formal and informal networks among community organizations to improve the health of individuals, families, and groups within communities.
Completion of a Bachelor's degree in Nursing and one year of nursing experience; or an equivalent combination of training, and experience.
Current Registered Nurse license from the State of Illinois. Must be willing to work in situations with known (or potential) infectious disease exposure, including risk of exposure to air-borne illness. Must be CPR certified. Valid Driver's License and reliable car for home visits.
Must be proficient in use of proper PPE including fitted N-95 respirator, gloves and gowns.
New hires are required to attend, on-site, paid training at our Wheaton location.
Bilingual a plus, but not required.
Good knowledge of practices and principles of Public Health nursing; good knowledge of social and economic factors influencing client behavior; good knowledge of immunization, diagnostic and laboratory procedures, tests and analyses; good knowledge of the inherent danger and applicable precautions to be taken with the use of medication; good knowledge of local health resources; some knowledge of medical record documentation and maintenance.Employment Type: Full Time (37.5 hours per week)
