CUSTODIAN
DEFINITION:
Under supervision of the Principal, Building Administrator and direction from the Head Custodian, completes daily custodial duties and responsibilities for the Wayne Public Schools District. All custodians are expected to have the ability to successfully accomplish all of the key duties listed in the job description. Specific duties and responsibilities of a day (1st shift) and night (2nd shift) custodian will be assigned by the District Custodial Supervisor(s) in coordination with the Building Principal/Administrator and Head Custodian.
REPORTS TO: Building Principal or Administrator, Head Custodian.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
Duties include custodial cleaning and custodial support and services of assigned buildings for the Wayne Public Schools District. Incumbent is expected to exercise initiative and independence in accomplishing the duties and responsibilities of a custodian, following departmental policies and procedures, developing effective work practices and solving minor custodial operational problems for his assigned area of responsibility.
KEY DUTIES:
GROUNDS (Daily)
Remove paper, cans, and trash from the grounds. Keep the playground equipment in safe condition.
Perform proper grounds maintenance such as; mowing, trimming, edging, trimming trees and shrubs, weeding planters and flower beds, and other such related duties.
LIGHTS
Replace burned out bulbs and tubes; turn lights off and computers in unoccupied rooms; turn out all lights, except for security lights and check that outside lights are on before leaving the school at night.
Know the location of all light switches, fuse boxes, and breaker boxes; clean fixtures and lens annually.
CUSTODIAL CLEANING
Entrances, Lobbies and Corridors
Daily:
Empty waste receptacles, remove debris, leaves, and litter; dust mop floors, Pick up soil from floor with dustpan; spot mop floors as necessary to remove soil. Vacuum carpet areas and mats; remove gum and soil spots. Disinfect drinking fountains. Clean entrance door glass.
Weekly:
Dust the tops of lockers, fire closets, extinguishers and window casings. Clean glass partitions, display cases, and interior door glass. Spot-clean finger marks and smudges on walls, door facings, and doors. Dust Furniture. Restore floor finish on non-carpeted floors.
Monthly:
High dust vents, lights, pipes, venetian blinds, over doorways, hanging light fixtures and connecting and horizontal wall surfaces. (High dusting, above 5'). For stairways, clean out the corners and the edges of each step. Remove gum, etc. with a putty knife. Damp mop or spot clean as necessary.
Classrooms and Laboratories
Daily:
Empty waste receptacles and replace liners. Clean marker boards, chalkboards and chalk trays.
Vacuum traffic patterns on carpets floors; remove gum and soil spots. Dust mop and wet mop tiled floors. Clean glass in doors and partitions. Lock all windows when you clean the sills. Clean drinking fountains.
Weekly:
Dust furniture surfaces and damp clean desk and table-tops. (Low dusting, below 5 feet). Empty pencil sharpeners. Vacuum carpeted areas thoroughly. Clean door surfaces.
Twice Monthly:
Restore floor finish on non-carpeted floors.
Monthly:
High dust vents, lights, pipes, Venetian blinds, and connecting vertical and horizontal wall floors. (High dusting, above 5 feet). Vacuum upholstered furniture.
Office, Lounge and Conference Rooms
Daily:
Empty waste receptacles and damp clean. Clean chalkboards and chalk trays and dry erase marker boards. Vacuum traffic patterns on carpeted floors and remove gum and soil spots. Dust mop and wet mop tiled floors. Clean glass in doors and partitions.
Weekly:
Dust furniture surfaces and damp clean tabletops. (Low dust below 5 feet) Empty pencil sharpeners.
Vacuum carpeted areas thoroughly. Clean door surfaces.
Monthly:
Restore floor finish on non-carpeted floors. High dust vents, lights, pipes, venetian blinds, and connecting vertical and horizontal wall surfaces. (High dust above 5 feet)
Restrooms, Locker Rooms and Showers
Daily:
Empty waste receptacles and change liners. Thoroughly clean and disinfect toilets and urinals. Thoroughly clean and disinfect shower rooms and dressing rooms. Restock dispensers: soap, paper towel, toilet tissue and sanitary napkins. Clean mirrors; clean and disinfect urinals and stools; clean basins; polish stainless steel and chrome surfaces. Spot wash walls, lockers, and partitions. Dust mop and wet mop floors with disinfectant solution.
Weekly:
Damp clean and polish partitions thoroughly. Pour at least one gallon of water down floor drains. Dust wall and ceiling vents. Clean doors and wall tile.
Twice Monthly:
De-scale fixtures. Scrub floor with floor scrubber.
Cafeterias and Lunch Areas
Daily:
Clear drains of food. Sweep kitchen floor area. Mop kitchen floor area with a clean mop. Empty trash and recycling cans. Empty trash and recycling cans throughout the day, as needed. Clean floor mats and replace. Sweep/mop Cafeterias. Clean tables with sanitizing solution
Weekly:
Clean kitchen entry areas as necessary. Wash trash cans. Sweep entry ways and hose down with cleanser to remove food debris and odors. Wash Floor Drains - Floor drains should be cleaned of food and debris
Monthly:
Clean vent filter, windows, walls and fans, light fixtures
Shop Areas
Daily:
Empty waste receptacles and replace liners, dust mop or sweep floors; and spot - mop floors.
Twice Monthly:
Dust sills and ledges; spot - clean walls
Monthly:
Mop floors with detergent solution and buff floors coated with floor finish or wax.
Gyms and Multipurpose Rooms
Daily:
Empty waste receptacles and replace liners. Dust mop court floors and spot clean using recommended treatment for dust mop. Clean glass in doors and partitions. Clean and disinfect drinking fountains.
Vacuum traffic patterns on carpeted floors; remove gum and soil spots. Dust furniture. Dust mop and wet mop tiled floors. Spot clean walls; remove graffiti.
Weekly:
Vacuum carpeted areas thoroughly. Clean door surfaces. Vacuum upholstered furniture. Clean all wooden and vinyl furniture (Low dusting, below 5 feet). Clean and polish brass or chrome.
Spray buff tiled floors; remove scuffmarks.
Monthly:
High dust (above 5') or vacuum vents, lights, pipes, Venetian blinds, drapes, connecting horizontal and vertical wall surfaces.
Shower Rooms, Locker Rooms and Dressing Rooms
Empty all trash containers (including small pieces of soap and other debris). Reline containers with plastic liner. Spray or wipe containers with germicide/disinfectant solution. Wipe dry with clean cloth or paper towel.
Benches Furniture and Lockers
Spray or wipe (with cloth) with germicide/disinfectant solution and scrub or wipe dry with clean cloth.
Spot clean walls and lights as needed, replace burned out lights. Replenish paper towels, soap, etc. Clean dispensers and lock.
Showers
Wipe down walls with germicide/disinfectant solution and cloth, wedge mop, sponge mop, or brush. Let solution stay on walls a few minutes to allow chemicals to work. Scrub or agitate solution to loosen soil and scum. Rinse with clean water. Polish handles, shower heads, and other hardware and wipe dry. Clean hair, etc. from shower drain. Sweep or dust mop (treated) floor to remove large pieces of paper and other debris. Pick up towels, socks, shoes, etc. and store appropriately. Lightly flood floors with germicide/detergent solution and warm water, let stand 3 minutes or more for chemical action. Agitate or scrub with wet mop, brush (long handled), or power buffer, if necessary. Pick up soiled solution with mop, squeegee to drain, or wet vacuum up.
Vomit Cleanup
Clean up vomit as soon as possible and always use gloves. If on carpeting only, use absorbent granules, sweep, then extract with disinfectant and dump waste directly into basin.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
Open the building each day. Check facility to ensure heating or cooling systems are functioning properly. Inspect the building exterior for possible unauthorized entrance and/or vandalism.
Dust mop halls and clean entrance mats throughout the day. Pick up paper and other debris from inside building, parking areas, and school grounds. Sweep entranceways. Make minor repairs, and replace light bulbs as required. Keep mechanical rooms, electrical rooms, boiler rooms and custodial closets clean, neat and organized. Clean up after sick students. Assist in setting up and moving furniture and equipment for daily operations, summer cleaning and special events. Assist in receiving and moving deliveries of storeroom materials. Perform duties in cafeteria as directed. Take care of emergencies and any work as directed by the Principal or Head Custodian. Clean and restock restrooms throughout the day.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Possession of a High School diploma or general equivalency diploma (G.E.D.) and five years of skilled custodial experience is preferred.
LICENSES:
Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and a satisfactory driving record.
Low Pressure Boiler License - Required
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:
Must possess strength, stamina and mobility to perform a variety of physical work indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions; snow removal and salting operations during inclement weather conditions; use of a variety of hand and power tools; drive and operate motor vehicles, lift and move materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds and heavier weights with the use of proper equipment; vision to read printed materials and computer screens; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone and/or radio.
Must work emergency and overtime as required.
KNOWLEDGE OF:
Principles and practices of custodial operations for an educational (school) setting.
Basic understanding of work procedures and safety related matters for custodial operations.
Policies, procedures, equipment, materials and supplies related to custodial operations found in a municipal or educational (school) setting.
Safety practices and principles related to custodial operations.
Applicable building and construction laws, ordinances, rules and regulations as they apply to custodial operations.
Custodial supply and inventory control practices and principals.
SKILL IN:
Planning, prioritizing, scheduling, coordinating, assigning, inspecting, and reviewing assigned custodial duties and responsibilities.
Accomplishing minor repair tasks in area of assignment.
Ability to follow policies, procedures, training and corrective actions.
Communication and effective interaction with co-workers, managers, subordinates, staff and the general public sufficient to exchange information and to receive work direction.
