Position Summary

Under the direction of the Music Department's Technical Director, the Audio Engineer position is responsible for providing all aspects of audio support for  classes and events scheduled in Music Department facilities, including live and recorded performance, and non-performance, during the afternoon, evening, and over the weekend.  This includes supporting the Concert Hall, the Sherwood Recital, and classrooms throughout Columbia College Chicago.  The Audio Engineer has frequent interactions with faculty, staff, and students across the college, oversees works study students and volunteers, and works closely with staff throughout the Music Department to provide support and troubleshooting. 

The hours for this position are scheduled Monday, Wednesday, and Friday 4 - 10pm, or Thursday 3:30pm -10pm  and Saturday 10am - 5pm.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Implement the setup and teardown of audio and video equipment used for live and recorded performances including monitors, lighting, and involved audio systems, amplifiers, keyboards, microphones, mixers, video cameras, projections, switchers, and Logic multi-track backup.
  • Save and publish recorded, edited, and mastered video & audio concerts to Music Department YouTube channel, shared student folders, external hard drives, and FileMaker Pro database for easy access and archiving.
  • Track and record video and audio of non-performance tracking sessions, coordinating all equipment logistics for each session.
  • Review and approve space requests for ensemble rooms, resetting rooms after 9:00 pm to be ready for morning classes and assisting with equipment and technical needs in ensemble rooms, classrooms, and concert halls.
  • Manage Music Center video monitor broadcasts of Logo, notices, future events and removing dated material.
  • Oversee volunteer concert hall tech crews as scheduled and assigned work study students.
  • Maintain reports related to daily operations, volume levels, set up and strike, equipment location and condition, and conducting inventory and tagging of new equipment.
  • Prep backstage gear for bands performing on outside events.
  • Provide audio support for college-wide events like Convocation, Manifest, Columbia Weekend as needed.
  • Maintain an organized and clean workspace at all times.
  • Flexible schedule required for evening and weekend support.
  • Perform other related duties and/or responsibilities as assigned or required.
  • Bachelor's degree in Audio Technology or related field is required.
  • Two or more years of experience running equipment and live sound, or equivalent combination of education, certification, experience, and/or training required.
  • Effective analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Exceptional communication, interpersonal, and customer service skills.
  • Ability to work a varied schedule.
  • Ability to work with diverse individuals in a positive and constructive manner while appreciating the unique contributions of individuals from diverse cultures, backgrounds, and social identities.
