About Fort Logan:
The Colorado Mental Health Institute at Fort Logan (CMHIFL) is one of two state hospitals serving our community. The vision of CMHIFL is to provide the highest quality Mental Health services to persons with complex, serious, and persistent mental illness within the resources available. Our mission is to support those individuals in achieving their recovery goals and reaching their full potential. CMHIFL provides inpatient treatment to adult patients, generally between the ages of 18-59. The hospital currently has 94 adult inpatient beds, over four treatment units and is scheduled to open an additional 44 beds (two units) in August 2022. These two forensic units will be dedicated to providing psychiatric stabilization and restoration treatment to individuals opined incompetent to proceed as a result of their mental illness. Medical services, occupational therapy, neuropsychological-rehabilitation services, and trauma-informed care services are available for all patients throughout the hospital.

About this work Unit:

The Psychologist II position works in the 24-hour State psychiatric hospital with individuals voluntarily and involuntarily committed for treatment. Patients receiving treatment at CMHI-FL have severe and persistent mental illness and may have traumatic brain injury, trauma disorders, and other complex dynamics. Each treatment team is multidisciplinary, including psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, addiction specialists, occupational therapists, recreation therapists, creative arts therapists, nurses, physicians, and Mental Health clinicians. In addition, the hospital offers dietary, peer, and chaplain services.


Purpose of this Position:

The Psychologist is responsible for individual therapy, group therapy, and family therapy. Individual and family therapy are provided as needed, which is determined in the treatment plan meetings and in collaboration with the treatment team. Group therapy is offered to all patients and group assignment shall be determined by clinical and individualized need, which the Psychologist guides. The Psychologist is responsible for developing group materials appropriate for patient specific needs and leading group therapy sessions. For individuals requiring a more detailed treatment approach or tailored intervention for specific behaviors, the Psychologist develops individualized behavior plans and programs and provides psychoeducation and training to all milieu staff for successful implementation. The Psychologist is responsible for monitoring the plan, documenting in the electronic health record, providing the patient and the treatment team with feedback, and modifying as needed.


Among other job duties, the Psychologist..


  • Conducts comprehensive psychological testing and consults with all treatment teams on appropriate referrals and testing results

  • Provides psychological expertise to the treatment teams, all hospital departments, and external stakeholders

  • Documents regularly in the electronic health record and contributes to the training of doctoral externs and predoctoral interns through various psychological seminars, supervision, co-facilitation, and mentoring

  • Actively contributes to hospital-wide events, in-service training, and program development. completion of certification evaluations and court testimony

  • Provides clinical leadership by contributing to, reviewing, and overseeing the psychologists treatment plans and therapeutic interventions

  • Contributes to the development and implementation of forensic training rotations in collaboration with the psychology department

  • Supervises designated psychology department staff members and supports execution of the hospital's mission, vision, and values within the psychology department and in collaboration with leadership

  • Conducts clinical and administrative supervision as a working supervisor, in addition to performance management and disciplinary processes

  • Serves as the clinical consultant for forensic treatment matters and guides treatment teams in their efforts to address restoration of competence, including the provision of training, clinical consultation, psycholegal treatment interventions, and may serve as the liaison between the treatment team and various judicial officers

  • Supports the tracking and reporting of treatment outcomes and contributes to program development based on best practices, national trends, and statutory requirements

Minimum Qualifications:
Education/Licensure/Certification/Experience:
Current, valid licensure as a Psychologist from the Colorado State Board of Psychologist Examiners
Three (3) years of experience as a licensed psychologist or permitted psychologist candidate, two of which must have been at the level of a fully operating psychologist

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with severe and persistently mentally ill patients
  • Experience with clinical supervision and/or program implementation
  • Experience with competence to stand trial evaluation and/or treatment
  • Experience conducting psychological assessments
  • Experience in clinical and/or forensic treatment
Conditions of Employment:
The successful candidate in this position must be willing and available to submit to the following conditions:
  • Full background check.
  • Valid and current driver's license.
  • May travel to attend training, court hearings, transport patients to appointments, and other related activities
  • May be exposed to bodily fluids or caustic chemicals
  • Must possess a doctoral degree.
  • Former State employees who were disciplinarily terminated or resigned in lieu of termination must (1) disclose that information on the application (2) provide an explanation why the prior termination or resignation should not disqualify the applicant from the current position, (3) provide the employee number from the applicant's prior State employment. Absent extraordinary circumstances, prior disciplinary termination or resignation in lieu of termination and failure to provide this information will disqualify the applicant from future State employment with CDHS.
