JOB SUMMARY
The Alcohol and Other Drug Counselor – Hospital Team interacts with participants providing screenings and brief individual and group modalities of drug and alcohol counseling. The Alcohol and Other Drug Counselor provides clients at San Diego County Psychiatric Hospital (SDCPH) with orientation, training, substance abuse recovery skills and information, and leadership necessary to provide them with the ability to recover from substance abuse addiction.
RESPONSIBILITIES

• Works directly with the participant to:
a. Provide orientation to the program and the concept of recovery
b. Develop and implement crisis and recovery plans
c. Provide brief individual and recovery services, information and education, and relapse prevention
d. Link the individual with community resources for continued community services
• Have knowledge in AOD screening measures including ASSIST, MAST and ASI, Co-occurring disorders, Motivational Interviewing, SBIRT, substance-abuse treatment, relapse prevention and harm reduction, transference and countertransference and co-dependent behavior.
• Provides a variety of interventions including brief individual counseling, crisis intervention, collateral services, and other relevant recovery-related services to clients.
• Establishes trusting relationships with and collaborates with clients, family members and/or significant others to facilitate clients’ recovery.
• Provides education to clients and their significant others regarding substance use.
• Provides education to clients and their significant others regarding substance use.
• Participates in treatment teams in conjunction with clinical staff at SDCPH to help develop treatment plans for clients.
• Documents client progress accurately and completes all required paperwork on time.
• Attends daily Hospital Team huddles and provides input to the clients’ treatment plan.
• Prepares and implements discharge plans.
• Knowledge of Substance-abuse treatment, relapse prevention and harm reduction.
• Initiates appropriate and timely interventions.
• Integrates recovery concepts with sound theoretical and practical applications of brief rehabilitative and individual, group, and milieu counseling principles.
• Possess skills necessary to provide effective screening, crisis intervention, brief counseling, and group counseling. Integrates recovery concepts with sound theoretical and practical applications of brief individual counseling principles.
• Provides input to develop and improve program servicing and delivery.
• Assists other staff in dealing with challenging client behavior.
• Comply with all MHS and program rules, policies and procedures including HIPAA standards.
QUALIFICATIONS
• Must either:
o a. Possess a State approved AOD-certification through CAADE or CCAPP upon hire; or
o b. Be in the process of becoming certified and complete a recognized alcohol and drug certification through CAADE or CCAPP within three (3) months of hire date; or
o c. Possess a strong background in working with individuals who have co-occurring disorders as well as a current license in the mental health field.
• AA degree preferred.
• Lived experience preferred.
• Proficient user of Microsoft Office Suite and EHR software.
• Ability to problem solve and react appropriately to emergency situations.
• Ability to work independently and effectively collaborate with a team.
PAY RANGE: $23.50 - $25.00 / HOURLY
