The Properties Artisan is a part of the Props team within the Production Department and will support the creation, tracking, and presentation of props. They report to the Head of Properties and work closely with other production team members.
The Artisan will meet with the props team to discuss what props are needed, make detailed plans from ideas and rough sketches, do historical research to make sure items fit within the appropriate time period of the production and work with a range of materials to create needed props.
This position requires a strong sense of creativity, attention to detail, excellent organization and time management skills. Collaboration and effective communication are essential as a prop artisan is often working closely with Prop Designers, Directors, Choreographers, Scenic Designers, and other designers as needed.
Typical Day-to-day tasks may include:
- attend production related meetings as needed
- pull and prep needed props from stock for props and set designer
- make detailed plans from ideas and rough sketches
- do historical research to make sure items fit with the time period of the production
- work with a range of materials to create realistic props including but not limited to: wood, fabrics, resins, foam, adhesives, epoxies, etc.
- use hand and power tools
- source new props to buy
- repair existing props
- inventory stock props and dressing items
- keep prop workshop area clean and organized
- assist in show strikes and restocking of used props
- assist in placing and securing of props during changeovers refurbish items to be usable or fitting for the production
Salary commensurate with experience. Minimum base rate for this position is $24.00/hour.
