Position Summary:
Mount Mary University's Promise Program is a federally funded TRIO Student Support Services program that provides academic, career, and financial support to 140 first-generation and limited-income college students each year. The program supports students to remain in good academic standing, persist in college, and graduate with a bachelor's degree.
Position Summary: Provide tutoring support in the areas of math, writing, science, etc., and present workshops on success strategies for the Promise Program.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Tutor students in academic subjects (Math/Stats, Bio 100, English, Philosophy writing)
- Prepare for tutoring sessions by reading course materials, reviewing subject-area content, creating supplemental materials as needed, etc.
- Provide support with time management, test preparation strategies, and effective study habits
- Provide writing support/feedback through all phases of the writing process
- Assess students' academic habits, interpret results of formal and informal needs assessments; design tutorial services in consultation with the student to meet student needs
- Add notes to Blumen for each tutoring session, maintain student data and records in a manner that ensures confidentiality and continual audit-readiness in terms of organization, completeness, accuracy, and full and appropriate documentation; maintain participant information, including case notes and contact hours, in the database in a complete, timely, and accurate manner and within established deadlines
- Communicate & collaborate with faculty, staff, and other members of the Mount Mary community to promote student college academic success
- Participate in staff meetings, professional development offerings, and Mount Mary University community-building activities and events
- Attend weekly staff meetings and 1:1 meetings with the Promise Program Director
- Participate in and help plan/facilitate program-wide events (Fall Kick-off, Fall Retreat, Spring Cultural Event, Soiree)
- Communicate with coaches regarding students of concern/students on academic probation
- Hold initial meetings with and complete Learning Profile for each new student accepted into Promise
- Develop plans for academic success with students who require specialized support to meet academic standing Perform other duties as assigned
Skills and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree required; Master's, preferred, with preference given to candidates with degrees in Education, English, math, or science
- 2+ years' experience teaching or providing p
- Proficient with math skills (up to College Algebra and Statistics)
- Knowledge of strategies to support English Language Learners
- Proficiency with APA and/or MLA
- Familiarity with college-level Biology preferred
- Able to build relationships with students while tutoring and understand the value of doing so
- Willing to prepare for tutoring sessions prior to meeting with students
- Willing and able to meet students at their current ability level
- Understanding different learning styles and how to differentiate support to meet a student's learning style
- Flexibility with scheduling to meet student demand
- Work cooperatively with faculty and Promise Program staff
- Strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to work with diverse groups, facilitate group processes, and foster collaborative decision making
