Scott Bridge Company, Inc.'s roots date back to 1933 when Mr. I. J. Scott (Jud) and two partners formed Scott Construction Company in Thomasville, Georgia, constructing many highways, airports, bridges, and dams in the Southeast. Mr. Scott left this firm in 1957 and formed his own company, The Scott Company, in Opelika, Alabama, his home. The Scott Company incorporated in 1965 as Scott Bridge Company with I. J. Scott and his son, I. J. Scott, Jr. Also in 1965 Mr. Gerard Swarthout came to the company, became company president, and retired in 1987.
Scott Bridge Company has been a member of the Alabama Road Builders since 1947, and became known as a river bridge contractor, completing many projects on the Warrior, Alabama, Coosa, Tennessee, and Chattahoochee Rivers.
Currently Mr. I. J. Scott's grandsons, I. J. Scott, III (Ike), President, William Scott, Vice President and David Scott, Board Member, own and continue to further the principles and traditions of their father and grandfather before them.
Position Summary
This position is accountable for overseeing a variety of duties to facilitate the completion of roads, building sites, bridges and other structures. In addition, the incumbent must perform the construction layout of the roadway and structures necessary to complete the project. The incumbent will work with field crews to layout the elements.
Responsibilities
- Works with the Project Superintendent and jobsite work crews to ensure that all survey conducted for layout of the project is complete.
- Applies basic survey skills, i.e., total station and level work, in the performance of the job.
- Assembles field data, reduces field notes and makes survey calculations.
- Assembles pertinent reference data before field surveys.
- Plots field data, using survey computer programs, constructs maps, and prepares reports.
- Establishes control for alignment and benchmarks; makes required line and elevation ties to existing centerlines and U.S.G.S. benchmarks.
- Makes topographical surveys and site surveys for the design and development of building, road, and bridges.
- Maintains records and prepares reports appropriate for the needs of the project and the future retention.
- May perform other related function as may be assigned or requested by the Project Manager or Project Superintendent.
Requirements
A B.S. Degree in Surveying or related discipline and a minimum of three (3) years experience, or equivalent work experience as a Surveyor is required. Prior hands-on work experience in heavy civil or marine construction is required. The incumbent must have a working knowledge of Project Construction, Principles of Surveying, Engineering & Project Standards, Surveying Software, State Law regarding Plats, Property Lines and Survey Monuments, and Safety & Environmental Compliance.
In addition, the incumbent must have:
- Knowledge of mathematics, survey computer programs, and survey computations applicable to the job.
- Knowledge of the use of mechanical drawing instruments or survey computer programs.
- Knowledge of the nomenclature and symbols of drafting.
- Knowledge of surveying instruments and equipment and their use and care.
- Ability to carry out written and oral directions.
- Ability to make arithmetic computations accurately and record results legibly.
- Ability to do transit and level work, which may include application of total station instruments to survey projects.
- Ability to use surveying instruments.
- Ability to reduce and plot field notes to make computations.
- Ability to make engineering sketches, maps, and drawings.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering plans and specifications.
