Job description

Overview

RTI International is one of the world's leading research institutes, with a staff of more than 6,000 individuals, dedicated to improving the human condition by turning knowledge into practice.  RTI International's Environment Practice Area is seeking a qualified candidate for a Project Management Specialist position.

This position will primarily support our Center for Applied Economics and Strategy and our Center for Water Resources. The Center for Applied Economics and Strategy (CAES) is a team of more than 50 economists, scientists, and engineers working in the areas of environmental and natural resource economics, energy, innovation economics and science policy, economic development, and food and agriculture. The Center provides analysis, research, and advisory services to support a wide variety of clients and partners.

RTI International's Center for Water Resources (CWR) provides support to government agencies, private companies, and international clients in multiple aspects of water resources management - from data management and analysis, to modeling of watersheds, rivers, and reservoirs, to identifying and managing the environmental and economic impacts of climate change.  The CWR team includes a wide range of backgrounds, interests, and capabilities, but a common thread is our interest in continuing to learn and push the boundaries of what can be done to support water management around the world.

The position requires excellent organizational skills, the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment, outstanding verbal and written communication skills, excellent interpersonal and relationship-building skills, the ability to prioritize tasks and focus on details, and the ability to work effectively in a team environment.

This position will also support other project activities within the Environment Practice Area.

Responsibilities
  •  Work with clients, RTI employees, project teams and contractors to develop and manage project processes, timelines, and schedules to manage project deliverables and service delivery. Support all phases of project implementation, from start-up to close-out.
  •  Engage proactively with project and program leadership teams to identify solutions, build team cohesion, and implement strategies that lead to more cohesive, effective, and happier teams.
  • Assist with developing and maintaining work plans, monthly status reports and other general Project Management resources and tools, including supporting project managers with staff and subcontractor resource allocation.
  • Manage logistics, develop agendas, and provide documentation for project meetings. Attend and participate in meetings by providing input for resolution to project issues.
  • Develop understanding and appreciation of client needs by interfacing with internal and external clients on projects and proposals.
  • Act as a liaison for staff, routinely working with the offices of Accounting, Finance, Payroll, Purchasing, and the office of Research Contracts.
  • Track subcontract/consultant deliverables, invoicing modifications, and closeout activities and review all submissions for compliance with statement of work and contract requirements.
  • Initiate subcontract/consultant agreements and purchase orders.
  • Assist in identifying project issues and risks concerning budgets and schedules.
  • Maintain a strong client focus and develop an eye for innovation (i.e., exploring/evaluating existing and new technologies) in day-to-day activities.
  • Understand and proactively recommend improvements to standard practices and processes within the Practice Area.
  • Develop solutions to problems not covered by established procedures.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's and 2 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience (e.g., high school plus 6 years; or 2- year Associates degree and 4 years' experience).  Skills and ability to grow into this role are more important than education.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and meet deadlines under pressure, being a self-starter who works both independently and as a collaborative team player.
  • Ability to break a process into smaller parts, find redundancy or better processes, and create efficiencies.
  • Ability to develop and recommend operational strategies to provide seamless delivery.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy is required.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, vendors, and clients.
  • Understanding of grants, contracts, and other award mechanisms.
  • Skilled in budgeting and financial analysis, strong Word Excel, and PowerPoint skills.  Knowledge of SharePoint and Salesforce a plus.
  • Intermediate knowledge of Smartsheet is required.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) course work or certification is a plus.
  • Knowledge of or ability to quickly learn internal RTI systems.
  • Ability to handle confidential and sensitive data.
