ORGANIZATION DESCRIPTION
Laguna Ocean Foundation (LOF) is a non-profit organization dedicated to sustainable ocean ecosystems along the Laguna Coast (Southern California) through science, education, and community engagement. We envision an evolving understanding of our local marine resources in order for Laguna Beach to better protect and enhance this valuable wilderness. Founded in 2003, our programs are built on the participation and contributions of staff, interns, and community volunteers.
RESPONSIBILITIES
This position seeks a collaborative and dedicated individual with high capabilities in strategic and cross-functional program design and implementation. As such, this position will serve a programmatic/technical and administrative function. This part-time position (approximately 20 hrs/wk) may transition into a full-time position depending on performance and funding. Under the supervision of the Managing Director, this position will:
· Will coordinate and harmonize the organizations’ efforts in capacity building, research, community engagement, and education.
· Help build the organization’s capacity as a thought leader in marine and coastal science and conservation.
- Cultivate individual and organizational partners to raise awareness of LOF and its mission in the community.
· Initiate ideas, projects, and programs.
· Provide technical and management support work that occurs across existing programs.
- Recruit, retain, mentor, develop, and reward a dynamic, mission-driven, highly-qualified, proactive, and diverse team.
- Support the work of the Education team and other team members involving community outreach, social media communications, and grant reporting and proposal writing.
- Guide the Education team in designing data collection, and ensure compliance with data collection requirements, and record data online with the aim of improving the efficacy of our education program.
- Recruit and develop college interns to advance LOF initiatives.
· Cultivate relationships with existing and potential partners in the public and private sectors.
· Initiate or collaborate on using original or secondary data on scientific and popular publications.
· Serve as a ‘mentor’, by training members in technical conservation work skills, mentoring personal and professional development, and teaching environment stewardship.
· Serve as ‘mentor’ to college and high school students in our Emerging Leaders Program by helping to design and implement independent projects.
· Routinely serve as the foundation’s representative by communicating with foundation’s partners, ensuring successful and timely completion of work projects, and upholding a positive representation of LOF.
· Participate in professional and outreach events.
· Support in organizing logistics, completing documentation, managing a budget, and communicating with LOF team.
· Other duties as assigned.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Minimum masters (but Ph.D. preferred) in marine or geographic science (e.g., marine biology, oceanography, GIS with specialization in marine ecosystems).
- Ability to translate scientific findings into content for the general public.
- Minimum 5 years of professional experience working on marine science and conservation issues.
- Proven track record in successful proposal development, particularly to larger agencies and large foundations.
- Ability to independently develop initiatives/projects/programs.
- Strong communication skills including public speaking, technical writing, popular writing, social media content.
- Ability to represent Laguna Ocean Foundation and maintain a professional appearance and demeanor at all times.
- Ability to receive and follow direction from LOF’s Board Members and Managing Director.
- Based locally (Orange County CA).
- Interest in the natural world and a passion to preserve marine and coastal resources.
- Understanding of Marine Protected Areas and coastal and marine ecosystems.
- Ability to read tide tables.
- Experience with non-profit organizations.
