This is a grant funded position with an expiration date of
December 31, 2025.
Applicants hired into this position who are not currently VA state government employees are eligible for a $5,000 sign-on bonus upon hire with signature of a 12-month agreement.
Applicants hired into this position who are currently working for VA state government are eligible for a $5,000 retention bonus after 10 months of successful service with signature of an agreement for an additional 12-months of service.
Classified Applicants hired into this position who are already working in VSP's Firearms Transaction Center (Dept 041000), or Dispatcher function are not eligible for either a sign-on bonus upon hire or a retention bonus after 10 months.

The Virginia State Police is seeking to hire a Program Support Technician Senior (PST) at State Police Headquarters in North Chesterfield, Virginia. The position is responsible for: (i) conducting background checks for Non-Resident Concealed Handgun Permit applications, (ii) contacting both law enforcement agencies and/or courts for incident reports or court documentation, and (iii) obtaining documentation of criminal record dispositions when needed. The position also coordinates several unit and agency-wide projects and is perfect to show off your independence and initiative. • Locates retrieves and analyzes criminal history information to determine lawful eligibility of individuals to purchase or possess a firearm pursuant to state and federal laws.
• Liaisons with the FBI National NICS personnel and the Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) Enforcement Division.
• Issues Nonresident Concealed Handgun Permits.
• Updates state and federal databases.
• Provides clerical and data entry support to the Special Programs Section of the Firearms Transaction Center.
• Examines Nonresident Concealed Handgun Permit Packets.
• Maintains statistical information.
Minimum Qualifications
• Considerable knowledge of state and federal criminal history databases Virginia Criminal Information Network/National Crime Information Center (VCIN, NCIC); of Microsoft (MS) Office applications to include Word, Excel, Exchange/Outlook; and of basic computer operations. • Demonstrated ability to access, retrieve, and interpret state and federal automated records; to apply research and analytical methodology in the interpretation of criminal arrest and disposition information; to use good communication and interpersonal skills; and to work under pressure within strict deadlines.
• High school graduate or equivalent.
• Valid motor vehicle operator's license.
• VCIN certification will be required.
• Requires either United States citizenship or have been a lawful resident of the United States for the past 10 consecutive years to apply for VCIN certification.
Additional Considerations
• Criminal Justice experience preferred.
