MISSION:
It is the mission of the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) to impact and transform young lives, strengthen families, and support safer communities through targeted prevention and rehabilitation.
JOB PURPOSE:
The Program Support Specialist assists in the development of youth through a variety of activities to include but limited to work programs, recreational services and leisure activities.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Responsible for providing safety and security in supervising youth involved in activities and events under Facility Programming.
Maintains tool inventory and control within the facility work program. This is to include conducting random searches and checks of all work program areas.
Observes, evaluates and reports on specific youth behavioral traits both positive and negative to appropriate staff.
Counsels' youth as needed.
Serves as a member of the Facility Programming team to assist in transporting youth to and from all events under Facility Programming.
The Program Support Specialist will also assist in the development and facilitating of programs.
Performs other related duties as directed by the supervisor.
Minimum and Additional Requirements
STATE MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
A high school diploma and relevant program experience. A bachelor's degree may be substituted for the required program experience.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Knowledge of state laws/institutional rules/guidelines for the custody, control, and supervision of juveniles.
Knowledge of SC Child Abuse statutes.
Knowledge of methods/practices of secure facilities.
Knowledge of various methods of instructing /handling/supervising juveniles in various activities.
Ability to pass a competency examination on SCDJJ Policies and Procedures and Institutional guidelines and procedures.
Demonstrate a high level of professionalism.
Ability to assist in a variety of Institutional programs such as the Insiders transport, recreation, visitation, carpentry, upholstery, mentoring, incentives, and discipline.
Ability to complete and maintain CLEE (Continuing Law Enforcement Education) Training.
Essential Position that is under general supervision; work reviewed by supervisor on a daily basis; annually scheduled performance reviews.
Willing to work any day or shift and stay over if necessary.
Essential Position. Must perform restraints on juveniles without restrictions.

Work in locked quarters, be able to bend over, lift 50+ lbs., must be mobile, no sedentary duties, must be able to work around incarcerated juveniles without supervision.
This position performs job duties relating to the custody, control, transportation, or recapture of youth within the jurisdiction of the Department of Juvenile Justice, and the employee may have direct and indirect contact with youth within the jurisdiction of the Department of Juvenile Justice. Training applicable to these duties will be provided.

Candidates must present documentation of their attainment of a college degree(s) at the time of the interview.

Preferred Qualifications
AGENCY PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:
A High School Diploma and a minimum of (1) year experience in military, law enforcement, correctional or police work. Must be at least 21 years of age. Must obtain required certification by Continuing Law Enforcement Education (CLEE) within 6 months of employment. Must have a valid driver's license and successfully pass a drug test.

Possession of contraband or refusing to submit to such search is grounds of disciplinary action up to and including termination. I will provide a written report confidentially to the Office of Human Resources Director, and a copy to my Executive Manager (Deputy Director, Associate Deputy Director, Inspector General) of all arrests, convictions, Child Abuse and Neglect Registry, and loss of SC Driver's License within 72 hours of their occurrence. Minor traffic violations need not be reported. Convictions such as driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs are serious violations and therefore must be reported.
